Jake Nightingale grabbed a victory at Lakeside Speedway.
What won the race: Jake Nightingale of Hutchinson, Kan., overtook Kayden Clatt for the lead on lap eight and controlled the remainder of the distance to capture Friday night’s 25-lap POWRi Heartland Late Model Tour debut at Lakeside Speedway. The 28-year-old driver beat Dillon McCowan to the finish line by several car lengths to earn $3,000 for his first-ever triumph on the fledgling Super Late Model series.
Quotable: “I was kind of thinking about it, like, God, this is kind of rough out here. This s— hurts,” Nightingale said. “And I was like, I’m sitting there looking at it, going back through my head, am I really going to sit back and maybe go ‘Man, am I OK I lost that race because that hurt? No.’ So I put it right back to what was working the heat race and it could diamond down there in turn one like nothing else I’ve ever seen. That was incredible. I just got enough of a run to sneak by there and get a run on (Clatt) in three and exit and away we went.”
Key notes: Racing in his home state, Nightingale was joined in victory lane by a large contingent of family and friends, including some he said hadn’t seen him race in a decade. … Nightingale bent his car’s left-front fender when he clipped an insider marker tire in the race’s final laps but he turned back a brief challenge from McCowan and pulled away to close out his milestone triumph. ... It was his second career victory in a Late Model, adding to an unsanctioned win last July 26 at Dodge City (Kan.) Raceway Park. … McCowan, racing on an off weekend for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, settled for second after chasing Nightingale for the final 18 circuits. … Advancing from the 12th starting spot, Chevy Boyer passed Kayden Clatt for third on lap 18. … Clatt slipped to fifth after leading the opening seven laps. Points leader Sawyer Crigler climbed nine positions to place seventh. … Three caution flags slowed the feature, all in the first 12 laps, including a final slowdown for Terry Phillips and Dalton Imhoff both falling off the pace simultaneously.
On the move: Chevy Boyer of New Haven, Mo., started 12th and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Nightingale’s No. 3J carries sponsorship from BG Products, Big Corner Creative, Mel Hambelton Ford and Quick Lane Tire & Auto Center.
Points chase: After Lakeside: 1. Sawyer Crigler (428); 2. Scott Crigler (402); 3. Jake Nightingale (392); 4. Kayden Clatt (389); 5. Joey Smith (355).
