Casey Roberts heads to a $7,553 victory at Sugar Creek Raceway.
What won the race: Inheriting the lead when three-time series winner Cody Overton spun with a flat tire on the 29th lap, fourth-starting Casey Roberts of Toccoa, Ga., led the rest of Thursday's 40-lap Schaeffer's Southern Nationals feature at Sugar Creek Raceway for a $7,553 victory. Roberts, who took second from Joseph Joiner on the 12th lap, held off Joiner's late-race challenge and took the checkers 0.579 seconds ahead of the Milton, Fla., driver.
Quotable: "I don't think we had nothing for (Cody Overton), he was really good," Roberts said, adding that "I noticed we started coming to him there and I didn't know if his tire was going down or what, but anyway, he was pretty good there."
Key notes: Casey Roberts, the 2018 series champion, notched his 14th career Southern Nationals victory. ... It was his first win since last Nov. 23 at Lavonia (Ga.) Speedway on the Carolina Clash Super Late Model tour. ... Points leader Donald McIntosh finished third. ... Polesitter Cody Overton controlled most of the early going, but Roberts caught him and slipped by on the frontstretch with 12 laps remaining, just as Overton spun in turn one with a flat left-rear tire, collecting fourth-running Todd Morrow. ... Besides the caution for Overton's spin, a lap-11 yellow flag fell for a turn-three spin by Stacy Boles, who continued in finishing 10th, the final starter to complete 40 laps. ... Brandon Overton and Jamie Oliver scratched after hot laps while Kenny Collins and Jason Deal were among early retirees. ... Rain hit the track earlier in the day but track officials were able to get the surface prepared for the special event. ... The feature lasted 20 minutes with 11 starters running at the checkers.
On the move: Dillard Hatchett of Cornersville, Tenn., started 10th and finished fifth.
