Bobby Pierce celebrates a $20,000 victory in the inaugural Dirt Cup.
What won the race: Sliding by Josh Rice after he was hampered by a lapped car on the 28th lap, fifth-starting Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., led the rest of Wednesday's 50-lap Shale Crescent Dirt Cup at Muskingum County Speedway. Pierce used a turn-three slide job to take control from Rice and never looked back, winning by 4.111 seconds for the $20,000 payday and his first Muskingum County victory.
Quotable: “This race car has been bad fast out of the gate," Pierce said of the Longhorn Chassis he debuted a week earlier Eldora Speedway's Dream XXXII. "It feels awesome man, first win here at Muskingum. Fought through that (lap-nine) caution that came out. We just got the lead and fell back to fourth, was like, ‘Man that sucks,’ but rallied back up through there. Josh Rice was driving a heck of a race, too. We had some fun throwing sliders.”
Key notes: Team Lucas won the overall points of the Ryder Cup-style event 117-84 after leading Team Outlaw 29-13 before the main event. ... Winning his nation-leading 14th feature, Pierce's initial bid for the lead was negated by a lap-nine caution and he then slipped to fourth on the ensuing restart before fighting his way back to the front. ... Nick Hoffman led the opening 14 laps before slipping off the backstretch and dropping to third behind Josh Rice and Pierce. ... Rice led laps 15-27 before making contact as he lapped Tristan Chamberlain, opening the door for Pierce to make his move. ... Pierce led the final 23 laps largely unchallenged, capturing a victory in his third consecutive start dating back to the June 4-6 Dream XXXII at Ohio's Eldora Speedway. ... Devin Moran was slated to start on the pole but tagged the field after resorting to a backup car when his team discovered engine issues following the night's head-to-head matchups. ... Tyler Erb overtook polesitter Ricky Thornton Jr. on the final lap for fifth. ... The race was slowed by two cautions, the first when Ryan Gustin slowed on the ninth lap; Gustin, who missed time trials with a stripped steering shaft, retired on lap 29. ... Brandon Sheppard slowed from 12th with a flat right-rear tire on the 38th lap before rallying to 11th. ... The 50-lapper lasted 21 minutes with 15 starters completing the distance.
On the move: Starting on the tail after going to a backup car, Devin Moran of Dresden, Ohio, finished eighth.
