Cody Overton discusses his victory driving Scott Ward's car.
What won the race: Subbing for a recovering Scott Ward, polesitter Cody Overton of Evans, Ga., overcame a two-lap dash to the finish for a flag-to-flag victory in Sunday's 40-lap Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series-sanctioned 14th annual Marilyn Olson Memorial at Casino Speedway. Overton beat Chad Becker by 0.9 of a second for the $3,000 payday, his first career WISSOTA Challenge Series victory and fourth overall win of the season.
Quotable: “I just can’t thank Scott (Ward) enough. This whole weekend, this is the only one I kinda wanted (to win), I know he’s won this deal two or three years in a row,” Overton said before adding, “The whole Ward family, they’ve been nothing but nice. They treated me like family as soon I got here and let me do what I enjoy doing.”
Key notes: Driving Scott Ward's No. 37 Longhorn as he recovers from shoulder surgery, the younger Overton knifed through lapped traffic then held off Chad Becker on a two-lap sprint for his fourth overall feature win of the season and first in WISSOTA Late Model action. ... Overton added to Crate Late Model victories on Feb. 7 at Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, Ga., March 21 at Swainsboro (Ga.) Raceway and May 16 at Southern Raceway in Milton, Fla. ... It's his first special since last July 9 at Montpelier (Ind.) Speedway on the DIRTcar Summer Nationals. ... Becker took second from Thomas Weisgram on a lap-nine restart, but never seriously challenged Overton over the final 30 laps; Weisgram faded to seventh. ... Mike Stearns slipped by points leader Tyler Peterson for third on lap 21, bringing Matt Gilbertson along a few laps later. ... Gilbertson held fourth until tangling with Kevin Eder on lap 39, sending Eder spinning as Overton raced towards the white flag; series officials pinned the caution on Gilbertson, who retired rather than tagging the field. ... Eder took fourth on the late restart, dropping Peterson to fifth. ... Besides the lap-39 caution for Gilbertson and Eder’s tangle, the race was slowed by two other cautions, including lap nine when Ryan Mikkelson and Zach Johnson spun as they battled for 15th. Johnson’s teenage son, Onyx, retired with a flat left-rear tire under the yellow. ... The second stoppage came on lap 11 for Justin Karlen’s turn-four spin. ... The event honored Marilyn Olson, of Watertown, S.D., the widow of Lyle Olson who worked at Minnesota Rubber for 34 years; she was an avid fan of dirt-track racing until her death on Feb. 14, 2013, at the age of 67. ... The race lasted 22 minutes with 17 starters completing 40 laps and 24 running at the checkers. ... Reigning series champ Dave Mass and Trevor Anderson scratched.
On the move: Jayson Good of Watertown, S.D., started 13th and finished sixth.
