What won the race: Second-starting Tyler Peterson of Hickson, N.D., cleared polesitter Matt Gilbertson as they raced out of turn four on the opening lap and captured a commanding flag-to-flag victory in Saturday's 40-lap Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series stop at Fiesta City Speedway. Peterson beat Gilbertson to the checkers by 1.127 seconds to win $3,000, his ninth career Challenge Series victory and first of the season.
Quotable: “You wouldn’t believe the difference in two cars. This is that Rocket that everybody knows the story about it flying off my trailer and we raced it in Arizona and I haven’t raced it since. We’ve been racing another car and I just wasn’t feeling right with it,” Peterson said. “I tell my buddy Kurt (Rogers) at Rocket all the time, there’s something special about this racecar and there is.”
Key notes: Peterson secured his third overall feature win of the season, adding to a May 9 victory at Ogilvie (Minn.) Raceway in local WISSOTA Late Models and May 21 at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, N.D., on the Northern Late Model Racing Association. ... It's his first Challenge Series victory since Aug. 8, 2024, at Proctor (Minn.) Speedway and third tour win at Fiesta City, adding to a 2024 weekend sweep there, worth more than $6,000. ... Hometown racer Matt Gilbertson had his hands full with Jack Koranda on a lap-17 restart, ultimately trailing Peterson for 38 of the 40 circuits, but never truly challenged for the lead. ... Seventh-starting Ryan Mikkelson grabbed third from Koranda on a lap-22 restart and rounded out the podium finishers. ... Koranda prevailed to finish fourth after a back-and-forth battle with Shane Sabraski where the two traded the position each between laps 22-26, with Koranda taking the spot for good on the 31st lap. ... The 15th-starting Sabraski, who entered as the most recent Challenge Series winner at Fiesta City, settled for sixth after losing a top-five finish to Joel Bennett with four laps to go. ... Jeff Provinzino and Johnny Broking each gained nine spots to round out the top-10 finishers. ... The race was marred by three multicar melees, the first coming on lap seven and necessitating a 10-minute red flag for cleanup after a grinding crash that eliminated Todd Frank and Dexton Koch. ... Taylor Madrinich retired with heavy nose damage 10 laps later before Kevin Burdick spun from fifth on the ensuing restart, collecting Jordan Tollakson and ending their race. ... The final stoppage came on lap 22 when Cory Crapser and Jon Tollakson tangled in turn one as they battled for seventh, collecting 12th-running Kevin Eder and eliminating all three drivers. ... The 40-lapper lasted 37 minutes with 12 starters completing the distance. ... The Challenge Series wraps up its weekend with Sunday's $3,000-to-win 14th annual Marilyn Olson Memorial at Casino Speedway in Watertown, S.D.
On the move: Zach Johnson of Lowry, Minn., started 17th and finished seventh.
