Bobby Pierce takes the checkers for a $5,000 victory at Tri-State Speedway.
What won the race: Bobby Pierce’s lap-13 slide job carried him past early leader Payton Freeman on Sunday at Tri-State Speedway for his tour-leading fifth DIRTcar Summer Nationals victory. Freeman initially answered Pierce’s move but ended up settling for second at the high-banked quarter-mile oval. Oakwood, Ill.'s Pierce earned $5,000 in taking the checkers 2.717 seconds ahead of Freeman, who matched his best series finish.
Quotable: "This track is awesome. This facility is really nice," Pierce said. "And you don't go to too many places where you can sling it in sideways and the track never ruts up, so whatever they're doing here with the dirt's really cool and I was really glad to come back to this track. I was hoping it didn't rain out or anything because I had some bad luck last time I was here and it's just been so long since we were here."
Key notes: Pierce has 45 career series victories, including a 2016 victory at Tr-State. ... Four cautions slowed the action, including for back-to-back multicar, midpack scrambles in turns one and two on lap 17. ... Mark Voigt lost a driveshaft on lap 33. ... payton freemBilly Moyer Jr. slowed for a lap-12 caution. ... Former series champions Brian Shirley and Jason Feger were no-shows at Tri-State after competing in every previous event this season. Feger has plans to compete Monday and Tuesday in XR Super Series action at Stuart (Iowa) International Raceway. ... The Helfrich-family promoted Tri-State Speedway hosted the DIRTcar Summer Nationals for the 24th time and first since 2018.
On the move: Cody Bauer of Farwell, Mich., started 12th and finished fifth.
Winner's sponsors: Pierce’s Pierce Race Car is sponsored by Hoker Trucking, Allgayer Inc., Rio Grande Waste Services, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Carnaghi Towing & Repair, Extreme Electric, Toyota of Danville, Quality Paint & Body, Base Racing Fuels, Senior Life Insurance and the Vermilion County Bobcats.
