Frank Heckenast Jr. and team celebrate his first career MLRA victory.
What won the race: Sticking primarily to the extreme bottom of I-55 Federated Raceway Park, sixth-starting Frank Heckenast Jr. of Frankfort, Ill., tiptoed by polesitter Daniel Adam on lap 19 then held him off on a late restart to win Saturday's 30-lap second annual Fall Frost Classic. Heckenast beat Adam by 0.673 of a second for the $5,000 paycheck and his first career victory on the Midwest LateModel Racing Association in the tour's debut at I-55.
Quotable: "I can’t ever seem to get it together when my dad’s here, for some reason it makes it a little bit harder every time he comes, but I love that he’s here," Heckenast said. "(I) definitely stepped on it in the heat (race), haven’t raced in a month, just rusty and totally missed that, but rebounded pretty good. The team worked really hard today, I knew it was gonna be a good day when I signed in No. 99 on my wristband. I didn’t want to say anything, but I’m like ‘This feels pretty good.’"
Key notes: Heckenast led the final 12 laps for his fourth feature win of the 2026 season, his first away from the DIRTcar Summer Nationals. ... Polesitter Daniel Adam remained loyal to I-55's cushion and blasted around early leader Tony Jackson Jr. on the 15th lap before giving way to Heckenast four circuits later. ... Aaron Marrant followed Heckenast on the bottom groove in taking third from Jackson on lap 18, then second from Adam on lap 20, before Adam reclaimed the runner-up spot for good a lap later; Marrant rounded out the podium. ... Jackson fired off the outside front row and led the opening 14 laps before fading to finish fourth, clinching his third career MLRA title (2013, '21). ... Matthew Larson passed Wil Herrington for fifth on the final lap, dropping Herrington to sixth. ... Rusty Griffaw climbed four positions to finish seventh. ... The first 28 laps were completed without incident until Michael Kloos came to a stop near the inside wall in turn two and required a tow back to the pits; Kloos was credited with 13th after the leader's torrid pace trapped several starters multiple laps down. ... Ten starters completed 30 laps with 18 running at the finish of the 12-minute main event.
On the move: Race winner Frank Heckenast Jr. started sixth.
