Nick Hoffman cleared Trey Mills on the opening lap and never looked back.
What won the race: Polesitter Nick Hoffman of Mooresville, N.C., was unfazed by a couple restarts in leading all 35 laps of Friday's 20th annual Dave Smith Motors World Finals second preliminary night at The Dirt Track at Charlotte. Hoffman beat 10th-starting Jonathan Davenport by 1.684 seconds for the $15,000 payday, his ninth World of Outlaws Late Model Series victory of the season and 20th of his career.
Quotable: "It’s super special. To do it at Pevely right after the World then come here and win, it’s just very special. I have a couple great memories of sitting in those grandstands," Hoffman said before later adding, "hell, there was one year Jason Feger came down here and put on a show, running above the cushion and that’s one thing tonight, they did a hell of a job turn this racetrack around. If you would’ve told me four or five hours ago that it would turn out like this, I would’ve called you a liar."
Key notes: Hoffman led largely unchallenged for his first career Charlotte victory and 13th overall feature win of the season. ... Jonathan Davenport marched steadily from his 10th-place starting position, muscling his way by Ryan Gustin on a lap-32 restart to finish second. ... Gustin, who trailed Hoffman for the opening 31 laps, settled for third. ... Ricky Thornton Jr., winner of Thursday's first prelim, took fourth from Chris Madden on the late restart, dropping Madden to fifth. ... Max McLaughlin improved four positions and finished seventh in his ninth appearance of the season. ... Bobby Pierce finished 10th to clinch his second straight World of Outlaws Series title and third in the last four years (2023, '25-'26). ... The race was slowed twice for flat right-rear tires, first for Drake Troutman's on lap 22, then eighth-running Hudson O'Neal on the 32nd lap; O'Neal was credited 19th aboard the Rumley Engineering No. 6 Longhorn. ... Third-running Trey Mills pitted with a flat left-front tire under the lap-32 stoppage. ... The 35-lapper lasted 23 minutes with 23 starters completing the distance. ... The night's four-wide, three-series parade lap was moved to Saturday to help move Friday's program along after a near four-hour rain delay following overnight storms; the feature ended shortly after midnight. ... Chris Ferguson, who was slated to start fifth, broke a driveshaft during pace laps and failed to take the green. ... Jason Riggs was OK after a scary rollover wreck in the night's third heat race. ... Brian Shirley and Devin Moran failed to qualify after solo spins in prelim action.
On the move: Ricky Thornton Jr. of Chandler, Ariz., started 18th and finished fourth; Ethan Dotson of Bakersfield, Calif., started 25th and placed 11th.
Winner's sponsors: Hoffman’s Tye Twarog Racing Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Durham Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from NOS Energy Drink, C&W Trucking, Petroff Towing, Tri Valley Equipment Sales, LoneWolf Petroleum, Haulin’ Haskells, Holdren Construction, Pivotal Propane, Bilstein Shocks, Eibach Springs, VP Racing Fuels, Rockwell Security and Wehr’s Machine.
