Chase Junghans won a heat race to earn the feature pole position.
What won the race: Turning back stiff challenges from Dallon Murty, polesitter Chase Junghans of Manhattan, Kan., led all 30 laps Friday at Lucas Oil Speedway for a $5,000 MARS Championship Series victory in the weekend's Fall Nationals opener. Junghans, who answered a Murty slide job with a crossover move exiting turn two with 10 laps remaining, took the checkers 0.937 of a second ahead of Murty for his first career MARS victory.
Quotable: "It could still be better, but I told myself at the beginning of the year, and I said this last time we were up front here, but every time I'd come here, I'd get my butt kicked and I can never figure it out," Junghans said. "I would tell myself there's a lot of good paying races here throughout the year, so I just wanted to try to get this place figured out and I think we're getting better but there's still room for improvement."
Key notes: Junghans won his second race of the season, the first also coming at Wheatland in Midwest LateModel Racing Association competition on Sept. 5. That victory ended a four-year drought for the driver who races a limited schedule, averaging just over 20 feature starts per season since 2023. ... He made his first MARS appearance since 2021. ... Drivers battled slick track conditions on the 3/8-mile circuit. ... Dylan Thornton and runner-up Dallon Murty swapped slide jobs battling for second on the 12th lap and the battle continued with Murty trying another lap-18 slide job that sent Thornton hard into the turn-two wall for the lone caution. ... Thornton retired and Murty apologized for the contact in his postrace interview. ... The 14-minute feature concluded at 10:04 p.m. with 19 of 22 starters running at the finish. ... In prelims, Tony Wolfe and Brandon Conkwright tangled down the backstretch in the night's first consolation with Wolfe's car ending up on top of Conkwright's; both drivers were unhurt. ... MARS wraps up its season with Saturday’s 50-lap, $10,000-to-win finale. ... Watch live on FloRacing.
