What won the race: Sliding by race-long leader Mark Whitener as the frontrunners raced through lapped traffic on the final lap, ninth-starting Michael Page of Douglasville, Ga., led the last set of turns and beat Whitener by 0.408 of a second to steal Sunday's $10,000 Barney Barnhill Memorial at Southern Raceway. Page picked up his fourth feature win of the season and first on the Rogers-Dabbs Crate Racin' USA 604 Series.
Quotable: "I was just waiting, trying to watch the laps and give it time to try and get to some lapped cars, cause we were pretty equal, I think. I didn’t really know what to do, I had nothing to lose, but just moved around," Page said. "What a technical racetrack, I’ve never in my life. You have all the grip you want, no grip, slime, there’s holes which makes it racy. Shoutout to (the Joiners)."
Key notes: Mark Whitener led the first 58 laps largely unchallenged but found himself mired in lapped traffic with two to go, opening the door for Page to make his move. Page carried a head of steam down the backstretch on the final lap and tossed his car inside of Whitener's entering turn three; the leaders made contact as Page leaned on Josh Ray's lapped car, launching him off turn four and beating Whitener back to the line. ... Page captured his third victory of the season in Crate Racin' USA action, adding to Winter Shootout wins on Jan. 3 at Talladega Short Track and Jan. 24 at Volusia Speedway Park. ... It's his first win on the CRUSA 604 national tour since Oct. 1, 2022, at Talladega. ... Whitener led the opening 59 laps from the pole before settling for second. ... CRUSA Winter champ Deisel Jones came alive after restarting seventh on lap 38, moving into third by lap 42 and rounding out the podium finishers. ... Fourth-finishing Sam Seawright ran second to Whitener from laps 12-23 before giving way to Page and eventually Jones. ... Joseph Joiner advanced eight positions to finish sixth at his home track that he co-owns with his family. ... CRUSA 604 points leader Joseph Brown was a surprising non-factor in finishing 12th. ... The event honored William “Barney” Barnhill, the founder of Southern Raceway; Barnhill spent five months and an estimated $300,000 constructing Southern’s 3/8-mile facility in 1988. ... The 60-lap feature was slowed by seven cautions, mostly for single or two-car spins, but no major incidents. ... Seventeen starters completed the 39-minute race with 15 finishing on the lead lap.
On the move: Deisel Jones of Alabaster, Ala., started 12th and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Page’s Baird Motorsports Mach X Chassis carries sponsorship from Level Excavation Utilities, Baird Truck & Trailer Sales, Southern Ridge Home & Development, ML Masonry, Cove 2 Coast Marine, Fundtool, RSA Hauling, CSR Aluminum Fabrication, Ridge Cole Racing and Modern Images.
