Cody Overton celebrates his first career Southern Nationals victory.
What won the race: Moving from third-to-first with a turn-three slide job past Joseph Joiner on a lap-24 restart, eighth-starting Cody Overton of Evans, Ga., led the rest of Thursday's 42-lap Ken Knight Memorial at Modoc Speedway. Overton, scoring his first victory for new team owner James Trantina III, beat Joiner by 2.303 seconds for the $7,542 payday, his first career Schaeffer's Southern Nationals victory.
Quotable: "I felt like I let one go at Harris (Speedway two nights earlier), too. Tonight just felt different, my car was really good, I knew it all night, just kinda messed up in qualifying and worked on it from there," Overton said. "I knew before we went out I was gonna be OK, but I knew Garrett (Smith) was still gonna be pretty good. This is right up Michael (Page’s) alley too, so I knew he was gonna be good. Hey, it worked out for me."
Key notes: Overton led the final 19 laps unchallenged for his fifth victory of the season (and first in Super Late Models). ... Fourth-starting Joseph Joiner took advantage of a turn-two slip by polesitter Michael Page and led laps 11-23 before giving way to Overton. ... Page led the opening 10 laps before spinning in turn two for the race's first stoppage on the 16th lap. ... Ethan Dotson and Donald McIntosh overcame a melee in the night's second consolation to finish third and fourth. ... Fifth-finishing Ben Watkins improved eight positions. ... Besides the lap-16 caution for Page's spin, the race was slowed four other times, including on lap 24 when Landen Zakalowski retired. ... Dotson and fourth-running Kaede Loudy made contact on the ensuing restart, sending Loudy spinning in front of the field, collecting Daniel Boles and J.R. Moseley, among others. Loudy retired on lap 25 after drawing the race's fourth yellow. ... Dotson and third-running Casey Roberts made contact on lap 26, sending Roberts spinning and collecting sixth-place Trent Ivey, who rammed into the stopped car of Roberts. ... The event honored Ken Knight, the longtime regional racer and team owner who fielded a car for his son, Cla Knight, for more than 15 years. ... Cla finished 19th after he was eliminated in the lap-24 restart crash. ... Dalton Cook, slated to start fifth, pitted with a flat right-rear tire before taking the green flag then rallied to sixth before retiring with nose damage after the lap-24 mess. ... The race lasted 31 minutes and ended just shy of 11 p.m. with nine starters completing 42 laps.
On the move: Allen Styck of Americus, Ga., started 20th and finished seventh.
