Bobby Pierce takes the checkers in front of a packed house at Adams County.
What won the race: Overtaking Nick Hoffman's smoke-trailing car on the 35th lap, 12th-starting Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., paced the final six circuits to capture Tuesday's $15,000 Half Mile Hustle at Adams County Speedway. Pierce beat Garrett Alberson by 1.156 seconds for his second Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory of the season and the 27th full-field series win of his career.
Quotable: "Right when I got to second was when I saw (Nick Hoffman) started smoking. That was the first time I finally got clean air from me to him. In my head I’m like ‘OK, now we gotta track down the nine’ and I saw the smoke," Pierce said. "I’m surprised he held on that long, I don’t know what his issue was there, but obviously oil line … it was oil and not tire smoke cause it was getting on my shield. It was actually creating a slippery patch when I followed him off the corner, I would lose (ground to) him."
Key notes: Pierce, who finished the race without tearoffs, won his second Lucas Oil event of the season following May 24's Show-Me 100 at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo. ... It's his 23rd overall feature win this season and 12th in 14 starts dating back to June 4's Dream XXXII prelim at Eldora Speedway. ... Hoffman, who led laps 9-34, reported never losing oil pressure, but said his smoking engine was laying down in the closing laps. He finished third by 0.069 of a second over 18th-starting Brian Shirley. ... Shirley, who overcame a flat tire in heat race action, nipped 10th-starting Mike Marlar at the line by 0.056 of a second. ... Garrett Alberson grabbed second on lap 39 but never challenged Pierce. ... Dillon McCowan, who lowered the track record in qualifying, led eight laps from the pole before fading to fourth on lap 30, then sliding off the turn-two banking and finishing 11th. ... The race was slowed by three cautions, the first on lap two when Jesse Sobbing left the turn-two racing surface. ... Clay Harris lost a driveshaft on the 16th lap. ... Eighth-running Ricky Thornton worked his way from 17th before slowing with a flat tire for the final stoppage on lap 38. ... The 40-lap Lucas Oil debut at Adams County lasted 24 minutes and finished at 10:10 p.m. with 18 starters completing the distance.
On the move: Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., started 18th and finished fourth.
