Jason Feger celebrates his first Wilmot victory and second Hell Tour win.
What won the race: Second-starting Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., fired off from the outside front row and led all 30 laps largely unchallenged in winning Monday's DIRTcar Summer Nationals feature at Wilmot Raceway. Feger beat Tanner English by 1.181 seconds for the $5,000 paycheck, his second Summer Nationals victory of the season and 37th of his career.
Quotable: “I was really comfortable at Sycamore last night, so I was able to feel a few things that I feel like helped me make some better decisions on the car and what directions we need to go,” Feger said. “This place was really difficult last year, but the track guys did a great job this year and we were all out there cussing them for as much track prep as they did. We thought it was gonna be wide open, but it blew back off pretty quick and was really good."
Key notes: Feger's second Summer Nationals victory came four days after earning $10,000 on June 12 at Coles County Speedway in Mattoon, Ill. ... It was his first Wilmot triumph. ... Feger captured his fourth feature win stateside this season, adding to a May 2 local DIRTcar victory at Fairbury (Ill.) Speedway and May 22 at Davenport (Iowa) Speedway on the MARS Late Model tour. ... Tanner English slipped by polesitter Frank Heckenast Jr. for second on the 13th lap, but never seriously challenged Feger over the race's second half. ... The points-leading English has five consecutive podium finishes; Heckenast settled for third. ... Cade Dillard, who intends to compete this entire week, was pressuring Daniel Adam for fifth when Doug Tye spun after being lapped, collecting fourth-running Mike Spatola on the 21st lap; Spatola elected to retire after DIRTcar officials sent him to the rear for spinning to avoid Tye. Dillard ultimately finished fourth after taking the spot on the lap-21 restart. ... Mitch McGrath went from eighth-to-fifth on the lap-21 restart and rounded out the top five. ... Clay Stuckey overtook Adam for sixth on the final lap, relegating Adam to seventh. ... Besides the lap-21 caution for Tye's turn-two spin, the race was halted by a 10-minute red flag on the opening lap when Mike Mataragas spun from 11th, collecting Curt Schroeder and Turk Letizia, with Letizia's car ending up suspended on top of Mataragas's hood; all drivers were OK though it took track officials several minutes to safely remove Letizia's car from the top of Mataragas's front end. Mataragas retired while Schroeder finished all but one lap in 17th and Letizia continued until pulling off on lap 12 with heavy nose damage. ... The 30-lapper lasted 26 minutes with 15 starters completing the distance. ... The Summer Nationals heads to Iowa for the next three rounds starting Tuesday at West Liberty.
On the move: Clay Stuckey of Shreveport, La., started 10th and finished sixth; Michael Leach of Sun River, Mont., started 13th and finished ninth.
