Drake Troutman celebrates his second series victory.
What won the race: Making a groove-switching move on the backstretch, Drake Troutman of Hyndman, Pa., dove under race-long leader Joseph Joiner in turn three after a lap-19 restart and led the rest of Monday's DIRTcar Summer Nationals 30-lapper at Wilmot Raceway. Troutman led the rest of the way, taking the checkers 1.244 seconds ahead of polesitter Jason Feger, the previous night's winner. Joiner finished third after leading the first 18 laps, the Floridian's first laps led on the circuit.
Quotable: "The track gets pretty narrow in certain spots," Troutman said, "and I knew if I didn't get it done there on the backstretch inside going into (turn) three, we probably was going to run second or third here tonight."
Key notes: Troutman earned his second series victory; he won Thursday at Peoria (Ill.) Speedway. ... The winner ran the high side most of the race but dropped to the inside to overtake Joseph Joiner on the backstretch with 11 laps remaining. ... A red flag appeared on the 10th lap when fourth-running Ashton Winger got too high between turns one and two and rolled; the Fusion Race Car ended up on its lid but Winger wasn't hurt (Kyle Bronson narrowly missed Winger's car). ... Besides the red flag, four cautions slowed the feature that ended at 9:50 p.m. ... A lap-five caution flag fell for a slowing Brenden Smith and a lap-eight yellow appeared for Dillon McCowan, who broke a driveshaft and stopped on the frontstretch. ... Mike Spatola slowed on the ninth lap with a flat left-front tire and drew another caution with a lap-19 spin (Ryan Gustin changed a flat tire during the caution). ... Twenty drivers eclipsed Brian Birkhofer's 12-year-old track record (15.030 seconds) with Winger establishing the new mark at 14.934 seconds. ... Brian Shirley, Saturday's series winner at Fairbury (Ill.) Speedway, led seven of eight heat race laps before driveshaft problems forced him to the infield; he loaded up and left before the consolation race. ... A $150,000 total points fund is distributed on the tour, including $10,000 to each week’s champion (Wilmot opened Week 2). … Feger was the first week champion.
On the move: Reigning series champion Tyler Erb of New Waverly, Texas, started 13th and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Troutman’s Team 22 Inc. Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Cornett Engine and sponsored by Victory Circle Auto Sales, Gambler Transport, Brick House Tavern, Armor Security, R.J.’s Excavating, Collins Signs, Sterling Lubricants and Bilstein Shocks.
Points chase: Week 2 after Wilmot: 1. Drake Troutman (80); 2. Jason Feger (75); 3. Joseph Joiner (70); 4. Dennis Erb Jr. (65); 5. Kyle Bronson (60). Overall after Wilmot: 1. Jason Feger (405); 2. Dennis Erb Jr. (360); 3. Drake Troutman (332); 4. Joseph Joiner (316); 5. Billy Moyer (313).
