What won the race: Taking the lead from pole-starting Brett Frazier on lap seven, fourth-starting Jon Mitchell of Texarkana, Texas, held off Eli Ross in a green-white-checkered finish to win Friday’s Spooky 50 opener at Super Bee Speedway. Mitchell beat Ross by 0.658 of a second for the $3,000 payday and his first career Mississippi State Championship Challenge Series victory.
Quotable: "(Racing among) those lapped cars, we was just trying to keep our pace. Just kinda went to center there early and think I kinda found it there before they did," Mitchell said. "But, we had a pretty good racecar tonight. The track was pretty good, it locked down there a little earlier than I thought it would, but just with these cold conditions and the wind, it just calls for that kind of stuff."
Key notes: Mitchell notched his third overall feature win of the season, adding to a June 20 Titan Legends victory at Diamond Park Speedway in Nashville, Ark., and his first American Crate Late Model Series win Sept. 20 at ArkLaTex Speedway in Vivian, La. ... Mitchell also won the 2024 Spooky 50 finale when the event was sanctioned by the Comp Cams Super Dirt Series. ... Second-starting Brett Frazier fired off the outside pole and led the opening six laps before giving way to Mitchell, then Eli Ross on the following lap, settling for third. ... Polesitter Mike Palasini Jr. faded to finish seventh. ... Tanner Kellick, the 2019 Spooky 50 winner, was relegated to a 13th-place result after shredding a right-rear tire while running fourth with three laps to go. ... The 40-lap prelim lasted 16 minutes with 12 starters completing the distance and 14 running at the checkers. ... The 33rd annual Spooky 50 concludes with Saturday’s 50-lap, $5,000-to-win finale.
On the move: Rob Litton of Alexandria, La., started 10th and finished fourth.
