What won the race: Powering around Spencer Hughes and taking the lead for good on lap 46 as they raced amid lapped traffic, fifth-starting Brian Rickman of Columbus, Miss., paced the final five circuits of Saturday's 20th annual Gumbo Nationals for a $10,000 payday at Greenville Speedway. Rickman led twice for 18 laps (21-33, 46-50) and beat Randall Beckwith by 0.546 of a second for his first feature win of the season, his 16th on the Mississippi State Championship Challenge Series and third career Gumbo Nationals triumph.
Quotable: "We was so good around the outside down here (in turns three and four). I don’t know what tires they had on, I had on a little harder tire and they might’ve took a little while for them to get going," Rickman said. "We just tried to stay smooth on the outside and they was running the bottom, kinda carried my momentum down here. Basically, lapped traffic helped a lot."
Key notes: Rickman, who lowered the track record in time trials, took advantage when Spencer Hughes was held up by a lapped car in turn four, beating Hughes to the line by 0.595 of a second at the completion of the 46th lap just before third-running Mike Palasini Jr. slowed for the race's second and final caution. ... Rickman's third Gumbo Nationals (2017, '19) marks his first feature win of any kind since April 19, 2025, an MSCCS victory at Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, Miss. ... Hughes led three times for 23 laps (6-14, 19-20, 34-45) before giving way to Rickman then losing second to Randall Beckwith on the lap-46 restart and settling for third. ... Palasini, winner of Friday's $5,000 Gumbo Nationals prelim, led once for four laps (15-18) and ran third from laps 21-45 before slowing to trigger the final stoppage and retiring; he was credited with 15th. ... Cam Harris led the opening five laps from the pole before fading to sixth by lap 33 and pulling off under green. ... There were six lead changes among Harris, Hughes, Palasini and Rickman. ... Besides the lap-46 yellow for Palasini's woes, the race was slowed one other time for a turn-three tangle on lap four involving Cooper Thrash and Chance Mann; Mann retired while Thrash soldiered to a 13th-place finish with right-front nosepiece damage. ... The 50-lap feature lasted 24 minutes with seven starters completing the distance and 14 running at the checkers. ... Jake Elam, Austin Storm and Joseph Long scratched from the main event.
On the move: Chandler Petty of Cabot, Ark., started 10th and finished fourth.
