What won the race: Leading all the way from the pole, Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., won Wednesday at Spoon River Speedway, pocketing $20,000 for winning the opener for both the FloRacing Night in America and Illnois Speedweek. Sheppard kept Hudson O'Neal in check in taking the checkers by 1.149 seconds after 50 laps.
Quotable: "I'm 50-50 here, I feel like. Sometimes I'm good and sometimes I run about 16th," Sheppard said. "Our car's been phenomenal all year long. We've just had a good balance. The guys give me a great race car every time we unload and that put it back in my hands."
Key notes: Sheppard also won 2022's tour event at Spoon River; he has three career FloRacing victories. ... Runner-up Hudson O'Neal held that spot all but two laps; fifth-starting Bobby Pierce briefly reached second early but settled for third. ... Two cautions slowed the 50-lapper, the first on the eighth lap when Ricky Thornton Jr. and Dan Ebert tangled in turn two (the cars were disentangled but Thornton's race ended with front-end damage). ... On the 18th lap, Clay Harris slowed and headed pitside. ... The 25-minute feature concluded at 9:15 p.m. ... Fifteen drivers completed 50 laps. ... The tour's second event is Thursday in Lincoln, Ill., while Tuesday's rainout at La Salle was rescheduled for Sept. 15. ... The series carries a $137,000 points fund with $75,000 slated for the champ. ... NASCAR star Carson Hocevar is expected to be a series regular, but missed Wednesday's feature. ... Lucas Oil Series staffers played officiating roles at Spoon River (FloSports purchased that series during the offseason).
On the move: Josh Rice of Crittenden, Ky., started 23rd and finished 13th.
