Nick Hoffman led the final 23 laps for his third straight Volusia victory.
What won the race: Sliding under Ricky Thornton Jr. at the exit of turn two on the 13th lap, fourth-starting Nick Hoffman of Mooresville, N.C., commanded the rest of Friday's 35-lap Federated DIRTcar Nationals fifth round at Volusia Speedway Park. Hoffman beat Brandon Overton by 3.523 seconds to collect $12,000, his third straight Volusia victory and 13th career World of Outlaws Late Model Series triumph, extending his series and DIRTcar Nationals points lead.
Quotable: “I was getting pretty frustrated (by restarts) a couple times. That one that was with 16 (laps) to go, I was doing the math, I was like ‘I don’t think I’ll get to lapped traffic now,’ so I was kinda glad to see that one to get me a clean racetrack for the rest of the race,” Hoffman said before later adding, “This is what you dream of, these are the kind of weeks you dream of. It’s unbelievable.”
Key notes: Hoffman led the final 23 laps for his fifth career DIRTcar Nationals victory and third consecutive, dating back to one of Wednesday's 20-lap DIRTcar-sanctioned semifeatures. ... He's earned more than $29,000 over that span. ... Hoffman's third little Gator trophy of the week increases his career total to 35 (24 little Gators, 11 big) across all racing disciplines and includes awards for week-long points titles. ... After trading the runner-up spot a couple times, Brandon Overton took the position for good when Ricky Thornton Jr. hopped the turn-one cushion and slapped the wall on the 29th lap. ... Bobby Pierce claimed third as Thornton, who led laps 11-12, slipped to eighth at the checkers. ... Drake Troutman gained 21 spots and rounded out the top five. ... Kyle Bronson overcame a heat race flat tire and improved 14 positions to place ninth. … The race was slowed by six cautions, most notably for a multicar melee on the opening start when polesitter Michael Leach brought the field down slowly, creating a bottleneck that led to Chris Madden spinning after contact with Mike Malar and collected Brandon Sheppard; all three drivers continued, though Marlar and Madden retired under a lap-17 caution for Frank Heckenast Jr.'s flat tire. … Other notable yellow flags came on a lap-17 restart attempt when Tyler Bruening was eliminated with heavy left-side damage after contact with Tim McCreadie; McCreadie continued without a right-rear quarter panel until retiring a few laps later. … Sixth-running Ryan Gustin appeared to lose an engine for the final stoppage on lap 27. … Leach, who led the opening 10 laps from the pole, retired from 14th under the caution for Gustin. … The race lasted 36 minutes with 22 starters completing 35 laps. … Dallon Murty scratched after suffering engine damage while winning the first consolation race. ... Jordan Koehler was parked for the night after making contact with Max McLaughlin while under caution during heat race action. ... Garrett Alberson failed to make the main event after he was disqualified from time trials for being light at the scales. ... The DIRTcar Nationals concludes with Saturday's 50-lap, $20,000-to-win finale.
On the move: Dustin Sorensen of Rochester, Minn., started 28th and finished sixth.

Heat race recap

Tyler Erb overcame several restarts and led all eight laps in winning the first heat race by 2.373 seconds over third-starting Blair Nothdurft, who prevailed after a back-and-forth battle with Mike Marlar. All three drivers punched their ticket into the 35-lap, $12,000-to-win main event. The night’s first yellow flag flew on the third lap when third-running Kyle Bronson lost a right-rear tire; Bronson continued to finish fifth after pitting. The second stoppage came on the ensuing restart when Tyler Millwood and Beckham Malone made contact coming out of turn two, sending Malone hard into the inside backstretch wall; he was OK but could not continue. The third and final caution came on the next restart attempt as Brenden Smith shed some debris after making contact with the frontstretch catch fence; Smith settled for fourth and will need to qualify through a consolation race. … Nick Hoffman earned a flag-to-flag victory in the second heat, leading the entire distance and winning by 2.998 seconds over fourth-starting Brandon Overton. Second-starting Brandon Sheppard held on for the third and final transfer spot into the night’s feature. Dallon Murty and Chase Junghans slipped by Bobby Pierce in the closing laps, relegating Pierce to finish sixth; all three drivers will need to qualify through a B-main. … Austin Smith led all the way from the pole in winning the third heat race by 0.126 of a second over third-starting Chris Madden, who trailed Smith all eight laps. Fourth-starting Sam Seawright took advantage of opening lap contact between Max McLaughlin and Jordan Koehler to grab the third and final transfer position. The McLaughlin-Koehler scrape sent Koehler up over the turn-four cushion before coming to a stop; Koehler appeared to escape major damage, but was parked for the night after making contact with McLaughlin under caution. McLaughlin continued to finish fifth. … Ricky Thornton Jr. cruised to win the fourth heat from the pole, taking the checkers 3.730 seconds ahead of third-starting Josh Rice, who pursued him the entire way. Tyler Bruening slipped by Tristan Chamberlain to grab third on the seventh lap, relegating Chamberlain to finish fourth. … Michael Leach commanded the fifth heat, leading from flag-to-flag and crossing the line 0.572 of a second ahead of third-starting Ryan Gustin. Frank Heckenast Jr. prevailed to finish third after a back-and-forth battle with Tim McCreadie, as Jake Timm slipped by McCreadie a lap later, relegating McCreadie to fifth. … Dan Ebert controlled all eight laps in the night’s sixth and final heat race, winning by 0.920 of a second over second-starting Cody Overton, as Max Blair held serve in rounding out the top-three finishers.
