Tyler Erb proudly displays his first career gator trophy at Volusia.
What won the race: Getting saved by an opening lap caution after appearing to lose the lead to Cody Overton, polesitter Tyler Erb of New Waverly, Texas, led all 20 laps of Wednesday's third Federated DIRTcar Nationals semifeature at Volusia Speedway Park. Erb beat Chris Madden by 1.807 seconds to win $5,000, his first victory of the season and first career Volusia triumph.
Quotable: "I’m glad we got that first restart back because I wasn’t sure what to do in (turns) three and four. I seen Cody (Overton) blaze around me and then I was like ‘Well just run the cushion until something happens otherwise,’" Erb said. "Getting into (turn) one was definitely a little sketchy, I would enter high and dive it down a couple times just bomb it across there, this thing would get to hucking and bucking."
Key notes: Erb earned his ninth career Georgia-Florida Speedweeks victory, adding to a 2019 triumph at Georgia's Golden Isles Speedway, seven wins at the now closed East Bay Raceway Park and his first career Speedweeks win on Feb. 12, 2017, a $5,000 DIRTcar Late Model event at North Florida Speedway. ... It's his first win since last Nov. 2's National 100 at East Alabama Motor Speedway, worth $30,000. ... Second-starting Cody Overton appeared to get the jump on Erb on the race's original start before Stacy Boles's fronstretch spin negated Overton's bid for the lead; Erb led all 20 laps after the race was completely reset. ... Chris Madden slipped by Overton on the second lap but never truly challenged Erb for the lead. ... Overton, the current DIRTcar Nationals points leader, settled for third. ... Garrett Alberson started and finished fifth in his first Volusia start of the season. ... Besides the opening lap spin by Boles, the race was slowed by one other caution when Tyler Millwood slowed on lap 10 after appearing to trail smoke; he retired and was credited with 17th. ... The night's third and final 20-lap semifeature lasted 10 minutes with 13 starters completing the distance.
On the move: Devin Moran of Dresden, Ohio, started 12th and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Erb’s winning Best Performance Motorsports Rocket Chassis is powered by a Scott Bailey Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Langenfelder Mechanical Contractors, First Class Septic, Roberts Bee Company, Anthony’s Pizza, JRR Trucking, Paul Construction, Curtis & Son Companies, Coles County Speedway, Sani-Weld, Inc., Keyser Manufacturing, Integra Racing Shocks, Sunoco Race Fuels, Behrent’s Performance, Midwest Sheet Metal, Race Ranch and KBC Graphix.
