Winner Pat Doar is flanked by runner-up Ryan Mikkelson (left) and third-finishing Dustin Sorensen (right).
What won the race: Battling in heavy lapped traffic, second-starting Pat Doar of New Richmond, Wis., regained the lead from Ryan Mikkelson for good with an inside move exiting turn four and led the final two laps to win Wednesday's $2,500 Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series season finale. Doar notched his sixth series victory of the season and the 42nd of his career en route to earning his sixth career title.
Quotable: “We got tangled up behind the same lapped cars and it all worked out,” Doar said. “I got tangled up the first time and then (Ryan Mikkelson) got tangled up the second time. (Mikkelson) has been getting a lot faster, I don’t know if I like that too much. He’s been fast and we got our car going better this weekend than we had last weekend.”
Key notes: Doar led twice for 25 laps (1-23, 39-40) and ties John Kaanta for the all-time series lead with six career championships. ... Fourth-starting Mikkelson, of Alexandria, Minn., marched past Doar on lap 24 when he was mired in heavy lapped traffic and led until Doar returned the favor on lap 39, passing Mikkelson just before taking the white flag; Mikkelson settled for the runner-up spot, 0.558 of a second back. ... Dustin Sorensen improved five positions and completed the podium aboard the Jimmy Mars-owned MB Customs house car. ... Cody Overton made a rare WISSOTA start and finished fourth aboard a Don Shaw-owned machine. ... Chad Becker gained three spots and finished seventh. ... Recently crowned track champion, third-starting Cole Schill slipped to finish eighth. ... Jordan Tollakson advanced seven positions and took ninth. ... Pole-starting Don Shaw faded to complete the top 10. ... Wednesday's 13-minute feature was completed without incident and saw 18 competitors complete 40 laps, with 24 running at the finish. ... Serving as the weekend opener, I-94 hosts WISSOTA Late Model racing for the next three nights as part of the $10,000-to-win 37th annual WISSOTA 100.
On the move: Cole Searing of Huron, S.D., started 12th and finished fifth.
Winner's sponsors: Doar’s Rocket Chassis is powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Tri Star Engines and Transmissions, Kivi Brothers Trucking, Polar Industries and Speedwerx Performance Exhaust.
Points chase: After I-94 (final 2023): 1. Pat Doar (1,721); 2. Jake Redetzke (1,584); 3. Jeff Massingill (1,556); 4. Sam Mars (1,485); 5. Ryan Mikkelson (1,424).
