What won the race: Polesitter Garrett Smith of Madison, Ga., fended off a late surge by Donald McIntosh in completing a convincing flag-to-flag performance Saturday at Tazewell Speedway. Smith beat McIntosh by a scant 0.278 of a second for the $10,053 payday, his second Schaeffer's Southern Nationals victory of the season and third of his career in the points-paying finale.

Quotable: "Man, it’s been so hard not to be down on myself with these last couple races we’ve had. We’ve never really struggled like that before, especially at these racetracks I grew up racing at," Smith said. "I don’t know how the race was behind me, our car was absolutely amazing tonight. Again I just want to thank the Lord and all my family back at home."

Key notes: Smith noted that rain began to fall as he stood in victory lane after adding to his July 14 Southern Nationals victory at Harris Speedway in Rutherfordton, N.C. ... It's his third win of the season including March 28 at Thunderhill Raceway in Summertown, Tenn., en route to the Spring Nationals title. ... Sixth-starting Donald McIntosh initially took second on a lap-two restart until losing the runner-up spot to Joseph Joiner just before the race's third and final caution flew on lap 42 when Cody Courtney slowed; McIntosh reclaimed second on the ensuing restart and cut Smith's advantage as low as 0.213 of a second on lap 51 but didn't quite have enough to draw alongside. ... McIntosh rode a wave of consistency — seven top-fives and three runner-ups in eight starts — to his third career Southern Nationals title (2021, '24, '26). He'd only made four 2026 starts before the series as he rejoined Billy Hicks Racing. ... Eighth-starting Cody Overton slipped by Joiner on the final lap, dropping Joiner to fourth. ... Dale McDowell, who spun during the first heat race after contact with Smith, climbed two positions and completed the top-five finishers. ... Besides Courtney's lap-42 caution, the race was slowed two other times, first when second-running Luke Morey slowed on the second lap. ... Dakota Smith spun in turn four on the 14th lap, collecting Daniel Boles and Jay Cardy; Cardy retired while Smith and Boles, who had heavy right-side damage, continued until retiring on lap 30. ... Stacy Boles finished 15th in what was being reported as the last planned start of his lengthy career. ... The 53-lap points-paying finale lasted just shy of 22 minutes with 12 starters completing the distance.
