Jason Feger (25) topped Mike Spatola (89) at Fairbury Speedway.
What won the race: Rising up in the late stages to grab the lead from McKay Wenger on lap 35, Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., turned back both Wenger and Mike Spatola in an electric conclusion to win Saturday night’s 40-lap Richard Craven Memorial at Fairbury Speedway. Feger nipped a hard-charging Spatola by 0.136 of a second at the line to secure a $5,012 payday in the DIRTcar Super Late Model FALS Cup feature.
Quotable: “Man, what a track — top, bottom, middle,” Feger said. “We were slicing and dicing. I didn’t know where to go. This is about the only place you still can run that old 3 (compound tire), and you can’t run the middle like that on them new tires. These old ones just like that are a lot better and it worked out good for us tonight.”
Key notes: Feger, who decided to skip the final four nights of the DIRTcar Summer Nationals in Michigan and Ohio to come home for weekend racing, started eighth and was still fourth at a lap-26 caution flag. Then he came alive to carve his way forward, sliding Wenger for the lead on lap 35 and surviving challenges from Wenger and Spatola over the final stages. … It was the second FALS Cup victory of 2026 for Feger, who had a flat right-rear tire when he reached the postrace scales. He also rebounded from spinning in his heat when his engine died due to an apparent fouled spark plug wire. … Spatola, who led laps 1-24, charged off the top of turn four and crossed over Feger heading to the checkered flag but came up less than a car length short. … Wenger was right there in the tight finish, placing third after leading laps 25-34. He was seeking to win the Craven Memorial for a third straight year after capturing the event’s first two editions in 2024-25. … Fourth-finishing Jake Little claimed that spot on lap 38 while Kyle Hammer, who climbed as high as second for laps 25-28 and made several bids on Wenger for the lead, completed the top-five. … Four caution flags slowed the event for minor problems: debris (lap 18); Jeffrey Ledford, who ran second for much of the race’s first half, falling off the pace while fifth on lap 24; seventh-running Blaze Burwell (lap 26); and Donny Walden (lap 37). … The event honored Richard E. Craven of Joilet, Ill., a former race car driver who earned track championships at his home state’s Fairbury, Kankakee and La Salle ovals; he died March 21, 2023, at the age of 56. ... The 40-lapper lasted just shy of 21 minutes with 14 starters completing the distance.
On the move: Daniel Adam of Peru, Ill., started 15th and finished sixth.
