Jonathan Davenport motors toward victory in his Salina, Okla., debut.
What won the race: Overtaking polesitter Eli Ross on the 11th lap, fourth-starting Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., cruised the rest of Friday's 30-lapper at the Salina Highbanks Speedway for his third Midwest LateModel Racing Association victory of the season. Davenport, starting out a stretch in Oklahoma before heading to the Upper Midwest, took the checkers 3.386 seconds ahead of Ross.
Quotable: "This racetrack was very demanding for sure. It's not like the videos I've watched," the five-time World 100 winner said. "They put plenty of water on it today and built a big ol' lip around the top. We just kept moving it up, moving it up. I hate it for (Eli Ross). He was pretty good there. I don't know if we could have got by him without him making that mistake there. ... Luckily, we was there at the right time and he made a mistake off (turn four) and I got a run on him, so then I just slid him in (turn) one."
Key notes: Making his debut at Salina, Jonathan Davenport added Friday's victory to his April 10-11 MLRA triumphs at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo. ... He has 18 career MLRA victories. ... Davenport's starting a stretch of racing that will continue with World of Outlaws Late Model Series action in the Upper Midwest. ... Runner-up Eli Ross led the first 10 laps. ... Salina's 30-lapper was slowed twice, including for a lap-nine red flag when Joe Gorby pulled his smoking car into the infield. ... Three other cautions slowed the action, the most serious on a lap-12 restart when Eli Ross and Derrick Stewart tangled exiting turn two while battling for second, resulting in Stewart's machine smashing the outside concrete wall. ... Other cautions appeared for Ryan Johnson on the seventh lap and then again when Chris Wilhite Jr. slowed on the 12th lap. ... Former MLRA champion Jesse Stovall made his first start since June 2023; he's mostly been out of the seat after a concussion-causing wreck several years ago. ... A fan was called in to do the announcing after the tour's regular announcer lost his voice. ... Saturday's finale pays $10,000-to-win. ... The highest average finisher between both nights will receive a $1,000 bonus.
On the move: Tony Jackson Jr. of Lebanon, Mo., started 19th and finished sixth.
