Jason Feger heads for his first MARS victory of the season.
What won the race: Overtaking third-starting Tanner English, polesitter Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., recovered the point on the second lap Friday at Davenport Speedway to grab his first MARS Championship Series victory of the season. The three-time and reigning series champ took the checkers 0.963 of a second ahead of fellow front-row starter Ryan Unzicker for his first tour victory of the season.
Key notes: Winning his 37th career MARS feature, Feger ended a four-race dry spell on the series (he won last season's finale). ... Feger, who led 38 of 40 laps, won his third consecutive series race at Davenport going back to last season. ... Runner-up Ryan Unzicker, who started outside of the polesitter Feger, led only the 26th lap after getting past Feger briefly exiting turn two. ... But Feger's high-side momentum carried him back into the lead as lower-running cars hampered Unzicker, who again put heavy pressure on Feger before a lap-30 caution stymied his challenge. ... Seventh-starting Ryan Gustin was running second with seven laps remaining when he got too high exiting turn four and briefly lost control, slipping back to fourth after getting too high again. ... Teenager Caden McWhorter climbed 13 spots to finish eighth. ... Two cautions slowed the action, the first on the third lap for an Austin Howes spin. ... On the 30th lap, a car went around on the backstretch while Jake Little and Derrick Stewart both showed body damage; Stewart was sent off the track for misbehavior during the caution period. ... The 19-minute feature concluded at 9:26 p.m. with 16 drivers completing 40 laps.
On the move: Dylan Thornton of Orcutt, Calif., started 10th and finished third.
