Sam Seawright takes the checkers for his second Ice Bowl victory.
What won the race: Polesitter Sam Seawright of Rainsville, Ala., led all 50 laps unchallenged in capturing Saturday's Ice Bowl XXXV at Talladega Short Track, his second consecutive event triumph. Seawright beat Dalton Cook to the checkers by 1.118 seconds for the $7,500 payday and his first feature victory of the young season.
Quotable: “This was my brother’s idea to build these (Mach X) cars and I’m gonna be honest with you, I wasn’t really a believer at first because Rocket and Longhorn is on top of the world. It just seemed unrealistic to be able to build a car that could compete like that,” Seawright said. “J.T. kept his head down and busted his ass on this thing, he’s got more hours into it than anybody.”
Key notes: Seawright's last victory was Aug. 2's Deep Fried 75 at Duck River Raceway Park in Wheel, Tenn., worth $15,000 on the Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series. ... His last Talladega win came in April 5's HTF-sanctioned Bama Bash, worth $12,000. ... It's his third victory aboard a Mach X Chassis (he and his brother J.T. Seawright developed it after purchasing Stormy Scott's Category 5 operation). ... Seawright becomes the fifth multi-time Ice Bowl winner, joining Jody Summerville (1996, 2002), Kenny Merchant (1997-'98), Shane Clanton (2003, '05, '11), Ray Cook (2009, '12, '23) and Page (2017-'21). ... Dalton Cook trailed Seawright the entire way, but never truly challenged for the lead. ... Page, winner of the night's $4,000 CRUSA Winter Shootout Series opener, started and finished third. ... Mario Gresham slipped by Dillard Hatchett on the last lap to finish fourth, relegating Hatchett to fifth. ... Chase Oliver improved nine positions to place seventh. ... The race was slowed by four cautions, the most serious on lap six that necessitating a 15-minute red flag for cleanup after Tod Hernandez spun while battling Mark Whitener for third. Hernandez nearly clipped an infield tire and spun at the turn-three entrance, eliminating Josh Henry, Chris Jones and Jamie Oliver; Chase Oliver, Luke Hoffner and Chase Walls were also involved, but continued. ... Hoffner continued with heavy body damage until tangling with fifth-running Jadon Frame on lap 44, eliminating Frame, Walls and John Ownbey. ... Jason Lively spun on lap five for the race's second slowdown until retiring a couple laps later. ... The first caution flew for a bad opening start. ... The 50-lapper lasted 32 minutes with eight starters completing the distance.
On the move: Tim Roszell of Anniston, Ala., started 21st and finished 10th.
