'Focusing on the awesome'

DirtonDirt.com

The spacious black mat lies on the ground, ostensibly to keep Josh McGuire out of the mud. But the mat is now covered with dirt, and as McGuire crawls under the car he seems oblivious as his shoulders stir up dust as he works. It is a warm March afternoon at Brownstown Speedway, and the pit area is filled with a colorful array of race cars. The weather is eerily mild for late March, and there is a hint of summer in the air. But the stately trees ringing the pit area stand barren and asleep, MORE

Drawing the cars

If you’re the type of fan who would rather see race programs skip consolation races and head straight into the main event, then you would love races in South Carolina. The Palmetto State has apparently placed a statewide ban on last-chance races at Dirt Late Model events, appeasing fans who realize that rarely do any of the drivers forced to rely on a consy to make the main event lineup ever have much of an impact on the feature race.

'I'm not that same person'

rickschwalliephotos.com

As the March chill fades and the Midwestern season gets rolling in earnest, a familiar face will be missing from the pit area on the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series this year.

After several years following the national circuit, Steve Casebolt has no plans of competing — at any level — in 2012. While he has not made definitive plans to permanently quit, he has sold his two race cars and has no plans of buying replacements.

“I knew at the end of last year that I wasn’t going to race the way MORE

Remembering racetracks

For whatever reason, I've always had a fascination with closed racetracks. There's just something about the mystique that draws me in. Whether I'm reading about a track in Allan Brown's History of America's Speedways or whether I'm looking for an old oval on Google maps, the mystery surrounding the track simply grabs my attention.

It's hard to say when or how exactly this happened. Perhaps it's because several of the tracks I grew up attending, such as R&R Speedway in Zanesville, Ohio, would MORE

Worthy road trips

Georgia-Florida Speedweeks is well behind us, even though it still feels a lot like winter in much of the United States. If you’re like me, you tend to get an itch about this time every year.

Few things will cure that quite like a road trip to Florida. And as it turned out, there was plenty of action to go around in the Sunshine State this season as East Bay, Ocala and Volusia all hosted Super Late Models. That’s enough dirt Late Model racing action to treat even the most dire case of Cabin MORE
