Good ol' racing people

I recently took a trip to Tennessee with my daughter and girlfriend for spring break. Traveling to Tennessee from my South Carolina home means heading westward on I-40 from Asheville, N.C. As we crossed into Tennessee I began thinking about my many racing excursions to racetracks all through the great state of Tennessee.

The trek we took over the next several days carried me nearby no less than 10 racetracks that I had worked an event at. It didn’t take long for me to get my mind going to put MORE

Promotional trial by fire

DirtonDirt.com

If you felt a strong gust of wind coming from the direction of the Carolinas sometime Tuesday afternoon, it was likely made by the combined sighs of relief breathed by Cody Sommer and Scott Autry when Autry was finally declared the official winner of the inaugural Carolina Crown.

Understandably, Autry was relieved to be cleared of inaccurate postrace tire tests that initially stripped him of his career-defining $20,000 victory. Sommer, the race’s promoter, was likely just as relieved to finally MORE

Too many provisionals

You'd almost have to be living under a rock to not notice all the provisionals sanctioning bodies are using now. One recent race in particular, I noticed that five of the 27 starters took some sort of provisional for the track or series, including "emergency" provisionals. Seriously? That means more than 18 percent of the drivers in the main event didn't even race their way into the feature.

More than 18 percent!?! Enough is enough.

Let me preface by saying this: I know that, to an extent, MORE

Anxious for VMS

pbase.com/cyberslash

Bags are packed, laptop synched, race notes printed out, weather forecast checked ... everything is good to go for this weekend’s Commonwealth 100 at Virginia Motor Speedway.

This is the time of year that I get a little antsy from being cooped up inside through much of the winter. Yes, I’ve already been to several races, but the first TV race always gives me a rush of anticipation. I can understand why people who have worked in the profession have a hard time staying close to the sport when MORE

Pickin' and choosin'

After a slew of early season races drew lackluster car counts, many of us so-called experts were up in arms.

On this website alone, plenty of ideas have been tossed around. From things like a burnout from Georgia-Florida Speedweeks; tracks hosting special events that don’t typically run Super Late Models; the lack of a sanctioning body; and of course, the old standby — the sagging economy — the ideas have been put out there for discussion.

I have no idea how to fix what could be considered MORE
