Matthees tops tight battle, wins $7,800 at Hibbing

HIBBING, Minn. (June 13-14) — Lance Matthees of Winona, Minn., emerged from a four-driver battle for the lead into the late stages of the 66-lap Rumble on the Range to grab a $7,800 victory at Hibbing Raceway. Steve Laursen of Cumberland, Wis., gave Matthees his best shot but settled for second while 10th-starting Pat Doar of New Richmond, Wis., Chad Mahder of Eau Claire, Wis., and Jeff Wildung of Nassau, Minn., rounded out the top five.
Notes: The winning No. 90 car is sponsored by Extreme Performance Lubricants, MBM Logistics, Yaggy Trucking and Matthees Enterprises. ... With a smaller crowd than expect, the purse was reduced and the winner received $2,200 less than the scheduled $10,000 payout from series promoter Terry Voeltz. ... Several flat tires hampered drivers in the first heat. ... A brief rain delay between the second and third heats provided fast action the rest of the night on a hooked-up surface. ... North Central Speedway in Brainerd, Minn., hosts a $10,000-to-win Rumble event June 16-17.
