By Todd Turner
DirtonDirt managing editorWhile Hudson O’Neal held onto the No. 1 sport, Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., rose five positions to No. 4 in DirtonDirt’s weekly power rankings following a stretch of three straight Georgia-Florida Speedweeks victories at Golden Isles Speedway near Brunswick, Ga.
Martinsville, Ind.’s O’Neal, the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series points leader leaving Georgia-Florida Speedweeks, topped the rankings with nine first-place votes following a pair of runner-up finishes at Golden Isles. The fourth-ranked Davenport topped a single ballot in the Keyser Manufacturing-sponsored poll.
An idle Nick Hoffman of Mooresville, N.C, the World of Outlaws Late Model Series points leader, remained No. 2 while Devin Moran of Dresden, Ohio, the $25,000 winner of the frantic Golden Isles finale, held onto No. 3. Slipping to fifth place was reigning WoO champ Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., who returns to WoO action in Tennessee with other series regulars this weekend.
Besides Davenport, Max Blair of Centerville, Pa., was the poll’s biggest mover, up four spots to No. 12 after being the lone driver at Golden Isles to finish fifth or better each night. Rising two positions in the pole was Ricky Thornton Jr. of Chandler, Ariz., who had a third-place run at Golden Isles but went winless in 19 Speedweeks starts.
Mark Whitener of Middleburg, Fla., entered the poll at No. 25 while Lucas Oil rookie Josh Rice of Crittenden, Ky., dropped out.
Voting is done by a 10-member committee made up of staffers and contributors to determine the Top 25 power rankings: Richard Allen, Bryan Ault, Jeff Broeg, Kelley Carlton, Ryan Delph, Josh James, Kevin Kovac, Kyle McFadden, Mike Ruefer and Kyle Symons. Results are compiled and tabulated by Todd Turner, who serves as a voting alternate along with fellow staffer Aaron Clay.
