Georgia-Florida Speedweeks

Georgia-Florida Speedweeks Almanac (Feb. 6)

February 6, 2026, 5:09 am
By Todd Turner
DirtonDirt managing editor

Friday's race: Fifth of 30 originally scheduled Super Late Model events from Jan. 22-March 7.

Venue: Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, Ga.

Race details: The second of three scheduled Winter Freeze events on Ray Cook's Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series pays $10,000-to-win (Thursday’s $5,000-to-win opener was cancelled by weather.)

Weather forecast: Sunny today with high near 60F. Winds W at 10 to 20 mph; Clear skies at night with Low 38F. Winds WNW at 10 to 15 mph.

Who's Hot: Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., last week’s Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series winner at Needmore Speedway in Norman Park, Ga., who lists Screven among his favorite tracks.

Who's Not: Garrett Smith of Eatonton, Ga., who makes his 2026 debut after closing the ’25 campaign with just a single top-five finish in his last 17 starts.

DirtonDirt prediction: Brandon Overton captures the opener for his first back-to-back victories since March 2024 — Todd Turner

Around the Pits: Continued cold and wet weather forced the cancellation of Thursday’s opener. … Screven has completed at least one Winter Freeze event all but three seasons (2014, '18 and ‘21) going back to 2012. … Brandon Overton and Shane Clanton are tied atop the list of winningest Winter Freeze drivers with four victories apiece. … Three drivers have won two Winter Freeze races: Ross Bailes, Rick Eckert and Josh Richards.

Up next: Saturday’s $25,000-to-win Southern All Star event at Screven’s Winter Freeze finale.

Next week: Volusia’s DIRTcar Nationals on Feb. 9-14 includes three nights of DIRTcar action and three nights of World of Outlaws Late Model Series competition.

This Date in Dirt Late Model History: On Feb. 6, 1997, home-track star Keith Nosbisch of Valrico, Fla., started 11th and took the lead on the fifth lap of a crash-filled feature at East Bay Raceway Park in Gibsonton, Fla., for a $3,000 Winternationals victory.

Speedweeks trivia: What unheralded, second-year Dirt Late Model racer won a pair of Speedweeks events and finished second in Winternationals points in 1981? (Answer in Saturday's almanac; Thursday’s answer for 1997 East Bay finale winner: Booper Bare).
