Shannon Babb celebrates his second MARS victory of the season.
What won the race: Charging back around Jason Feger and retaking control for good after a lap-13 restart, second-starting Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., led all but one lap of Saturday's MARS Late Model Championship Series return to I-55 Federated Raceway Park. Babb led 39 of 40 laps and beat Feger by 1.528 seconds for the $5,000 paycheck, his second MARS Series victory of the season and 13th of his career.
Key notes: Babb, the recent Hall of Fame inductee, earned his sixth I-55 special since 2012, collecting more than $40,000 over that span. ... It's his fourth overall feature win this season and second on the MARS circuit, adding to May 24's victory at Spoon River Speedway in Banner, Ill., also worth $5,000. ... Sixth-starting Jason Feger emerged as Babb's strongest challenger, moving into second by lap 10 and briefly taking the lead on a lap-13 restart before Babb powered back around for good at the completion of the 14th lap; Feger drew within a half-second of Babb on lap 37 but faded back in the final stages. ... Seventh-starting Dylan Thornton, one night removed from a vicious rollover crash at Benton (Mo.) Speedway, charged from sixth on lap 28 to third by lap 31 and cut Babb's lead by nearly three seconds over the final 10 circuits; Thornton seemed to find something on I-55's thinning surface but simply ran out of laps in finishing third. ... Polesitter Billy Moyer faded to finish fourth. ... The race was slowed four times, none bigger than a lap-six restart pileup that necessitated a 10-minute red flag for cleanup after Jake Little spun from 12th, collecting Bob Gardner, Brandon Carpenter and eliminating Michael Kloos; Carpenter continued for a handful more laps before retiring under green while Little continued until slowing for the final stoppage on lap 22 and retired with apparent suspension damage. ... Mark Voigt slowed and retired for the initial lap six caution while debris slowed the racing action on lap 13. ... The 40-lap feature lasted 29 minutes with 13 starters completing the distance and 18 running at the checkers.
On the move: Blaze Burwell of Mount Vernon, Ill., started 20th and finished ninth.
