Ashton Winger holds his $12,000 winner's check at Magnolia Motor Speedway.
What won the race: Overtaking Jake O'Neil for a third time, fifth-starting Ashton Winger of Hampton, Ga., led the final three laps Saturday at Magnolia Motor Speedway to complete a sweep of the Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series Clash at the Mag weekend. Winger added his $12,000 victory to Friday's $8,000 payday in denying O'Neil his first major touring series victory by 0.545 of a second amid rugged conditions after afternoon rain.
Quotable: "I'll be honest, Jake was so far gone I thought I was going to run second," Winger said. "Then I looked up on the board and there was like five (laps) to go. ... I could see Jake, and then I saw he had a lapped car or two giving him trouble. And man, things are so aerodynamic that, you know, just whenever you get in bad air and it's rough like that, it's really just all about finding a clean, smooth line."
Key notes: Winger notched his fifth career Hunt the Front tour victory. ... Besides his winning pass on lap 48, twice Winger overtook seventh-starting Jake O'Neil on restarts (laps 18 and 28), but twice O'Neil went under Winger exiting turn two to regain command several laps later. ... Winger led laps 18-20, 28-32 and 48-50. ... O'Neil, a HTF tour rookie, appeared primed for his first major touring series victory, but he couldn't hold off Winger's late charge. ... Third-place finisher Zack Mitchell, who battled vision problems, started third but was running 12th at halfway. He rallied late in the high groove to run as high as second. ... Polesitter Joseph Joiner led the first 13 laps and finished sixth. ... Sam Seawright started in a Coltman Farms Racing backup car and retired after 15 laps. ... Three cautions slowed the action, including on the initial start for a scramble back in the pack. ... Jamie Elam got into the turn-two wall on the 18th lap; his car was towed away. ... On the 28th lap, Mario Gresham ended up sideways on the backstretch just in front of the leaders. ... Evan Ellis scratched from the lineup. ... The 23-minute feature concluded at 11:05 p.m. with 11 drivers completing 50 laps. ... The Magnolia weekend was the tour's first completed races since April 11 after five rainouts in May. ... Rain hit the track mid-afternoon, but the event went on as planned.
On the move: Runner-up Jake O'Neil of Tucson, Ariz., started seventh.
