What won the race: Mastering the 3/8-mile West Virginia Motor Speedway after grabbing the lead from Michael Lake on lap 40, Devin Moran of Dresden, Ohio, recorded a $25,000 victory in Sunday night’s 58th running of Carl Short’s Hillbilly Hundred. The 31-year-old Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series regular was threatened briefly by Drake Troutman through the race’s middle stages before a flat tire knocked Troutman from contention, allowing Moran to march on and defeat Zack Dohm by 1.691 seconds.

Quotable: “Michael (Lake) was going so hard, so early, I knew there was no way he was gonna be able to keep that pace so I was just kind of biding my time,’ Moran said. “And, yeah, just a great racetrack from when we were here in May. I mean, quite frankly, everybody knows it just wasn’t good (in the spring), and tonight, they’ve just made it way, way better, and I think every time we’ve been here, every time they’ve had a race, they made it better.”

Key notes: Moran’s first career Hillbilly Hundred triumph put him on the event’s winner’s list with his father Donnie, who captured the race in 1988, ’89 and 2001. They’re the first father-and-son to win the long-running event. … Moran’s seventh overall victory of 2026 snapped a 23-race winless streak dating back to his June 27 Firecracker 100 win at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa., the site of last year’s Hillbilly Hundred. All of his other victories this season came in Lucas Oil action. … Dohm rallied to finish second after pitting on lap 39 following contact with Eddie Carrier Jr. that damaged his car’s nose. He reached second on lap 90 with a pass of Chris Carpenter but never challenged Moran. … Troutman slowed with a flat right-rear tire on lap 72 while chasing Moran but made a valiant charge back to finish third. He took the spot with a lap-97 pass of Chris Carpenter, who finished fourth after running as high as second. … After leading laps 2-39, Lake rode a rollercoaster the rest of the way. He slipped to fifth, climbed back to second on lap 82, fell to fifth again and then spun in turn four on lap 87, ending his night. … Moran led the first lap before ceding the spot to Lake. ... The feature was slowed by 11 caution flags. … The race’s first pause came on lap 11 when a red flag was displayed for Brock Morris, who stopped on the backstretch with flames shooting from under his car’s hood. … Allen Clark smacked the turn-two wall on lap 19. … Debris caused cautions on laps 24 and 86. … Kyle Thomas stopped for a lap-29 caution. … Eddie Carrier spun out of the top 10 on lap 39 after a scrape with Zack Dohm, who pitted with nose damage. … The caution remained out on lap 39 for a car running over the restart cone. … Dave Hess Jr. was running third on lap 58 when he stopped in turn four; a red flag was subsequently needed to clean up the substantial oil left by Hess’s car. … Ryan Montgomery spun in turn three on lap 78. … Kyle Hardy triggered a lap-87 caution with a left-rear flat tire just after reaching fifth. … The 100-lapper lasted 1 hour and 6 minutes with 15 cars completing the distance. It ended at 11:37 p.m. … The race returned to WVMS for the first time since 2010, but that race was contested on the original 5/8-mile layout.
