Nick Hoffman on the victory stage at Eldora Speedway.
What won the race: Slipping underneath race-long leader Ricky Thornton Jr. after he bobbled in turn two, Nick Hoffman took command and captured Sunday’s second 25-lap Baltes Classic semifeature at Eldora Speedway. Hoffman beat Thornton by 0.891 seconds for the $5,000 Valvoline American Late Model Iron-Man Series victory, snapping a three-month winless drought dating to June 3's FloRacing Night in America event at Eldora.
Quotable: "I haven't won since the Flo race here at Eldora. It's been a struggle," Hoffman said in victory lane. "We've run second and third. I see everybody on Facebook saying all I can do is run second. It's pretty damn nice to get one here. That lit the fire a little bit for me. ... Just waiting for (Thornton) to mess up maybe one time, and he finally did."
Key notes: Nick Hoffman, who earned $500 as the night's overall fast qualifier courtesy of C&W Sales, snapped a 29-race winless streak. …. Ricky Thornton of Chandler, Ariz., led the opening 23 laps — and by a second with three laps remaining — until his slip-up exiting turn two on lap 24 that opened the door for Hoffman. ... Doug Drown brought out the lone caution of the semifeature when he came to a stop in turn four on the opening lap after starting 16th. … The event paid tribute to Eldora founders Earl and Berneice Baltes.
Winner's sponsors: Hoffman’s Tye Twarog Racing Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from NOS Energy Drink, C&W Trucking, Petroff Towing, Tri Valley Equipment Sales, LoneWolf Petroleum, Haulin’ Haskells, Holdren Construction, Pivotal Propane, Bilstein Shocks, Eibach Springs, VP Racing Fuels, Rockwell Security and Wehr’s Machine.
Points chase: Before Eldora: 1. Colten Burdette (1,052); 2. Rod Conley (954); 3. Miles Cook II (834); 4. Seth Daniels (823); 5. Travis Carr (699).
