What won the race: Joel Bennett of Hortonville, Wis., overtook race-long pacesetter Johnny Broking for the top spot on lap 23 and controlled the remainder of the distance to capture Saturday night’s 40-lap opener of the Labor Day Shootout at Hibbing Speedway. Bennett’s first-ever Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series victory was worth $3,000 and came by 1.044 seconds over 10th-starter Dave Mass, who grabbed second on lap 38 when Kyle Peterlin slipped over the outside berm on the backstretch.
Quotable: “That was a lot of fun,” Bennett said. "That was an interesting track all night long, but we made the best of it. It’s really good to race with these guys. It’s fun because most of them are really nice and clean.”
Key notes: Bennett turned back several challenges from Peterlin before Peterlin fell from contention with two laps to go when he made a last-ditch bid for victory, though he held on to finish third. … Seeking his first-ever win on the WISSOTA Challenge Series, Broking settled for a fourth-place finish after leading laps 1-22. … Shane Sabraski's two-race WCS win streak ended with an eighth-place finish. ... Four caution flags slowed the feature, all coming during the race’s first half. … Gunner Frank spun off turn four on the first lap and ended up stuck in the muddy infield, which was saturated by heavy rain in recent days. … Zach Wohlers slid to a stop inside of turn one on lap six from contact with Derek Vesel while battling for ninth. … Jim Morris spun off the backstretch on the lap-six restart. … A George Ledin Jr./Adam Ayotte tangle in turn four paused the race on lap 20. … An identical 40-lap, $3,000-to-win program is scheduled for Sunday to close out the Labor Day Shootout.
On the move: Skeeter Estey of Kelly Lake, Minn., started 23rd and finished 10th.
Winner's sponsors: Bennett’s MB Customs Race Car carries sponsorship from Frank Farms, ServiceMaster Recovery, Schenk’s Hardwood Flooring and Precision Suspension.
