Ashton Winger rolls around Lavonia Speedway in prelims.
What won the race: Driving under Ben Watkins in turn three on the 12th lap, polesitter Ashton Winger of Hampton, Ga., led the rest of Friday's 50-lap Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series main event at Lavonia Speedway for a $10,000 victory. Winger won his fourth series event in a row in taking the checkers 0.716 of a second ahead Watkins, who took second from 13th-starting Dalton Cook on a green-white-checkered restart.
Quotable: "Joseph (Joiner) had me beat and I really think if Ben (Watkins) doesn't get choked up there by them lapped cars, I don't really know if I'm good enough to get by him," Winger said. "I was just in the right place at the right time. So just things are going good. ... there's times when you feel like you do everything right and you run 15th, and then there's times where you do stuff where you should run fourth and you win."
Key notes: Winger's four straight victories are unprecedented in series history. ... He has a series-leading seven career HTF victories. ... Joseph Joiner made a serious bid for the lead on the 33rd lap just as a caution flag flew, but never could get as close again and broke on the 49th lap. ... Joiner (laps 24-32; 41-48), Cody Overton (34-40) and Ben Watkins (12-23; 49-50) took turns in second chasing Winger. ... Third-place finisher Dalton Cook never officially ran second but he inherited that spot with Joiner's departure for the final restart. ... Seven cautions slowed the action, the first on the 13th lap for Dillard Hatchett's flat left-rear tire. ... Former series champ Josh Putnam spun in turn four on the 21st lap (he appeared to show his displeasure with NASCAR driver Carson Hocevar during the ensuing caution). ... On the 33rd lap, Austin Smith spun in turn two just in front of the leaders. ... On the lap-33 restart, Jake O'Neil, who had charged from 23rd to seventh, got a flat tire and slid into the turn-two wall. ... Jason Lively's spin drew another quick caution (Beckham Malone pitted with nose damage under caution). ... On the 35th lap, Malone and Hocevar spun in turn four, requiring a significant cleanup. ... The final caution appeared on the 49th lap for Joiner's mechanical woes. ... The 39-minute feature concluded at 11:40 p.m. in front of a big Lavonia crowd. ... Super Late Model time trials didn't conclude until 9:15 p.m., but the rest of the HTF program was run quickly thereafter. ... Among no-shows was Zack Mitchell, second in HTF points but now a World of Outlaws Late Model Series driver after being tapped earlier in the week by G.R. Smith's Team 22 Inc. ... Jeremy Steele of York, S.C., was entered in his family-owned No. 22 after ending a stint with Billy Hicks Racing.
On the move: Dalton Cook of Smiths Station, Ala., started 13th and finished third.
