Darrell Nelson picked up a $3,000 paycheck in Superior, Wis.
What won the race: Overtaking polesitter Kevin Burdick on the eighth lap, Darrell Nelson of Hermantown, Minn., led the rest of Saturday's 40-lapper at Gondik Law Speedway for a $3,000 Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series victory. The 2021 series champ and outside front-row starter notched his ninth career series victory and first in three seasons as he took the checkers 3.258 seconds ahead of Burdick
Quotable: "I was nervous in (turns) one and two and I was waiting for either (Kevin) Burdick or (Travis Budisalovich) to come in there and do a slider with seven (laps) to go or whatever it was, but yeah, this car was good and hats off to everybody that helps me," Nelson said.
Key notes: Nelson's previous series victory came Aug. 31, 2003, at Proctor (Minn.) Speedway. ... It was his third series win at Gondik Law, adding to $2,000 triumphs there in 2015 and '21. ... Nelson notched his first Late Model victory of the season (he's won in super stocks and Midwest mods). ... Polesitter Kevin Burdick led seven laps and settled for second ahead of Travis Budisalovich. ... Points leader Tyler Peterson finished fifth. ... Two cautions slowed the feature, the first on the 27th lap when Adam Ayotte stopped at the end of the frontstretch (his car was towed away). ... A lap-34 yellow fell when Aaron Lillo stopped, which zapped a nearly four-second margin for Nelson. ... The 23-minute feature concluded at 10:48 p.m. ... The 10th annual Great Lakes Border Battle was originally scheduled as a double-feature weekend for the series, but Friday’s opener rained out. ... Weather threatened earlier in the day but Saturday was a lovely, if not cool, night of racing. ... Challenge Series competitors are slated to return to Gondik Law for the July 17 Twin Ports Twin 25s paying $2,500-to-win apiece and Sept. 2’s $3,000-to-win program.
On the move: Ninth-starting Pat Doar of New Richmond, Wis., finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Nelson's MB Customs Race Car is sponsored by Amsoil, Tarnowski Bros. Construction and Excavating, Dave Lucia Trucking, Badger Excavating, Willow River Saloon, Jige Signs, CMD Shocks by Hammer and CSI Building.
