Jason Feger negotiates Old No. 1's tricky surface in a flag-to-flag victory.
What won the race: Polesitter Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., fought off repeated challenges from Tanner English to officially lead all 30 laps Tuesday at Old No. 1 Speedway, capturing his fourth DIRTcar Summer Nationals victory of the season and a $5,000 payday. Feger briefly lost the lead to English down the backstretch on the 13th lap then pulled away on a lap-19 restart to win by 0.945 of a second.
Quotable: “It’s pretty awesome (to tie Don O’Neal in series victories). I probably saw most of his wins, ya know, helping Billy Drake as a kid. We went to a lot of these and we’ve pretty much been doing a lot of them since we started in a Late Model,” Feger said. “To be tied with him, as dominant as he was there for a long time, it feels awesome. We’re just fortunate to ever win one, let alone as many as we have, so it’s pretty awesome.”
Key notes: Making his Old No. 1 debut Jason Feger collected his seventh stateside feature victory of the season. ... It was his 39th career DIRTcar Summer Nationals victory, moving him into a tie with Don O'Neal for fifth on the tour's all-time list. ... Series points leader Tanner English moved into third on the third lap, then took second on lap seven before pressuring Feger the rest of the way. English nearly took the lead on lap nine, with Feger nosing ahead by 0.139 of a second to maintain control, then briefly took the lead down the backstretch on the 13th lap as they raced through lapped traffic. ... Feger ultimately took advantage of a lap-19 restart and wasn't seriously challenged over the final 12 laps. ... English, who won the last Hell Tour visit to Old No. 1 on July 2, 2024, captured his fifth runner-up finish and 10th top-five result in 11 series starts thus far. ... Sam Seawright, a night after earning his first Summer Nationals victory at Camden (Tenn.) Speedway, reclaimed the third spot on lap 21. ... Clay Stuckey grabbed fourth on the 28th lap as Tyler Millwood slowed with apparent mechanical issues; Millwood, who ran as high as second in the early going, limped across the line in 15th as the final starter to complete 30 laps. ... The lone caution flew on the 19th lap when Charlie Cole and Mark Voigt each slowed with separate issues before retiring. ... The race lasted 11 minutes with 17 starters running at the finish. ... Nathan Brown scratched after finishing second in the night's B-main consolation.
On the move: Shane Stephens of Arlington, Tenn., started 20th and finished 11th.
