Billy Moyer discusses his 102nd career Summer Nationals victory.
What won the race: Hall of Famer Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., fired off from the outside front row and fended off early challenges from Jason Feger, then late-race pressure from Tanner English to capture Tuesday's 30-lap DIRTcar Summer Nationals stop at Benton Speedway. Moyer led all but one lap and beat English by 0.687 of a second for the $5,000 payday, his 102nd career tour victory and first feature win of the season.
Quotable: “It feels harder (to win), for sure, than the old days. Tough competition and it’s just tough to get it done nowadays,” the 68-year-old Moyer said. “Some of these guys will win multiple times through the season, I mean they’re good, they work their butt off to get the job done, for sure.”
Key notes: Moyer captured his first Summer Nationals win since last June 10's season opener at Brownstown (Ill.) Bullring. ... His first series victory (July 2, 1986 at Spoon River Speedway in Banner, Ill.) came 14,603 days earlier. ... He won for the 11th time on the circuit in Missouri. ... Moyer notched his first win aboard an AK Race Car in holding off fellow AK Race Car driver, Tanner English. ... The third-starting English slipped by Jason Feger for second on the 20th lap and kept pace with Moyer after a lap-26 restart, but never seriously threatened over the last handful of laps. ... The pole-starting Feger nipped Moyer at the line by 0.028 of a second to lead lap 10 then faded into the clutches of English before settling for third. ... Tyler Millwood was fourth after a lengthy back-and-forth battle with Clay Stuckey. ... Michael Leach overcame a near rollover in time trials but never had pace with the frontrunners and finished 15th. ... The race was slowed twice, first at the halfway mark when fourth-running Daniel Adam slammed the turn-three wall and briefly climbed it with his right-front tire before limping back to the pits. ... Cody Vanover appeared to strike an infield tire on the 26th lap and spun into the infield before requiring a tow back to the pits with major nose damage. ... The 15-minute feature ended just before midnight after a bank of lights went out in turn three, causing more than an hour delay; 16 starters completed 30 laps with 19 running at the finish. ... Allan Rettig scratched after time trials.
On the move: Camaron Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., started 18th and finished 10th.
Winner's sponsors: Moyer’s Keith and Elia Lawson-owned AK Race Car is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by Karl Chevrolet Auto Group, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Shaw Trucking, Henderson Motorsports, All Makes Collision Center, Out-Pace Racing Products, Hoosier Racing Tire, Eibach Springs, Penske Racing Shocks, Performance Bodies, Wehrs Machine, Sunoco Race Fuels and Midwest Sheet Metal.
