Bobby Pierce celebrates his 12th WoO victory of the season.
What won the race: Sliding by midrace leader Nick Hoffman on lap 30, polesitter Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., led the final 11 laps unchallenged in winning Monday's 40-lap World of Outlaws Late Model Series-sanctioned Land of Lakes Classic at Ogilvie Raceway. After a lead-swapping battle with fellow front-row starter Jonathan Davenport, Pierce beat Hoffman by 2.159 seconds for the $12,000 payday, his 12th World of Outlaws victory of the season.
Quotable: “That was so much fun (with Jonathan Davenport), we had a heck of a race man, that was so much fun. (Nick) Hoffman, (Ryan) Gustin, that was probably race of the year for those first 30 laps,” Pierce said. “Thanks to those guys for racing me very clean. (We were) just going at it.”
Key notes: There were six lead changes among Pierce, Jonathan Davenport, Pierce and Nick Hoffman. ... Winning his 17th overall feature of the season, Pierce led three times for 16 laps (6, 9-12, 30-40). He's won eight times to earn more than $300,000 over that the last month. ... Pierce extended his points lead in grabbing his sixth win in the last seven feature starts aboard a new Longhorn Chassis. ... Second-starting Jonathan Davenport led three times for 12 laps (1-5, 7-8, 13-17) before giving way to Nick Hoffman on a lap-18 restart after slamming the turn-two wall and ripping off his car's right-rear quarterpanel. ... The third-starting Hoffman led laps 18-29 before Pierce claimed the lead by 0.013 of a second just before the race's fifth caution flew on lap 31 when Cody Overton slowed from ninth in his debut aboard a James Trantina-owned Triple B Motorsports entry. ... Eighth-starting Ryan Gustin grabbed second on lap 32 and pressured Pierce on a lap-33 restart before Hoffman regained second on the final lap. Gustin notched his first podium finish since May 13. ... Tyler Erb, despite spoiler damage, edge rookie Trey Mills for fourth. ... Dustin Sorensen, who missed Saturday's WoO event at 141 Speedway for his engagement, climbed 14 spots to finish seventh. ... Besides the lap-31 caution for Overton, the race was slowed five times, initially on lap 18 when Drake Troutman slowed from eighth. ... Tim McCreadie blew a right-rear tire on lap 19; he return to finish ninth. ... Three of the final four stoppages were for debris, including on a lap-29 restart attempt after Ryan Gustin sent an infield cone flying down the fronstretch. ... The 40-lapper lasted just shy of 28 minutes with 20 starters completing the distance.
On the move: Dustin Sorensen of Rochester, Minn., started 21st and finished seventh.
