Spencer Hughes Saturday's flashes under the checkered flag to capture Saturday's Southern All Star feature at North Alabama Speedway.
What won the race: Reclaiming the point with an inside move by mid-race leader Dalton Cook on the 24th circuit, third-starting Spencer Hughes of Meridian, Miss., led the remaining circuits to win Saturday's marathon 40-lap Spring Showdown at North Alabama Speedway. Hughes paced a total of eight laps to earn $5,000 for his second career Coltman Farms Racing Southern All Star Series victory and his first since Sept. 9, 2017, at Columbus, Miss.'s Magnolia Motor Speedway.
Quotable: “Oh man, it feels like it’s been five years since I won a Late Model race,” Hughes said. “To make it back here is good. I can’t thank everybody (enough) at JCM Motorsports. These rides are tough to come by nowadays and it’s what I love to do, so I’m just really proud (to get the win)."
Key notes: The win was the first for Hughes aboard a Rocket Chassis fielded by JCM Motorsports, the team he joined late last season. ... Fourth-starting Dalton Cook led laps 2-33 before giving way to Hughes and finishing 2.656 seconds back. ... Slated to start from the pole, Oakley Johns spun on the opening lap following contact amid a treacherous turn-one slide job by the race-winning Hughes, who led the first circuit. "I hate that I got into Oakley on that first lap. There was water standing on the bottom of the track," Hughes said of the scrape with Johns, who completed five laps before retiring. ... Fifth-starting Cory Hedgecock took third on a lap-35 restart and rounded out the podium finishers. ... Josh Putnam improved eight positions and finished fourth. ... Outside polesitter Christian Hanger was deemed to have jumped the race's initial start and was penalized a starting row. He slowed from fourth with a flat right-rear on lap 35 and called it a night. ... Saturday's feature was slowed by 12 separate incidents, including three red flags for major crashes, the largest coming on the fifth lap when Braden Mitchell was sent upside down following contact from Bill Mahan and Chase Oliver. While there were no injuries in the wreck, none of the drivers continued. ... Another 15-minute red flag came on lap seven when Bobby Allen spun off the turn-one racing surface and flipped several times. He was also uninjured but unable to continue. ... The final red flag lasted 10 minutes after Monte Skinner slammed the frontstretch wall and stopped with heavy right-front suspension damage. ... The 40-lap main event lasted nearly 75 minutes, with 11 competitors completing the distance and 13 running at the finish. ... The Southern All Stars weekend doubleheader concludes with Sunday's March Madness at Cherokee Speedway, a $20,000-to-win feature co-sanctioned by the Mid-East Super Late Models.
On the move: Dean Carpenter of Coldwater, Miss., started 21st and finished eighth.
