What won the race: Polesitter Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., ran away and hid Saturday at Needmore Speedway for a $6,000 victory in the unsanctioned Gene Maine Memorial. Overton led by a nearly half-track margin with 10 laps remaining and took the checkers 1.384 seconds ahead of runner-up and new track record-holder Kyle Bronson.
Quotable: "It's just great to see all the fans back (here), and it's just a special race to win. I wanted this one really bad," Overton said. "Last week I was talking to one of my old racing buddies and he was telling me stories about Gene Maine, so for his family to be here, obviously he's got a lot of history around these parts. ... (The car) was a handful after that last restart. I don't know if I sealed my right-front (tire) up or what ... but we held on."
Key notes: Hometown driver John Baker drew a lap-seven caution when he lost a left-rear wheel. ... Dalton Cook drew a lap-15 yellow and lap-32 caution fell for debris. ... The event drew a large crowd for the first Super Late Model event at Needmore in five seasons. ... Kyle Bronson lowered the track record in qualifying with a 14.114-second lap, but he lost the first heat after being penalized for jumping the start. ... The inaugural event honored late racer Gene Maine of Valdosta, Ga., who died in a December automobile accident at the age of 55.
On the move: Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., started 11th and finished fourth.
