Carson Ferguson poses with the $10,000 paycheck at PPMS.
What won the race: Powering around polesitter Darrell Lanigan out of turn four on the opening lap, fourth-starting Carson Ferguson of Lincolnton, N.C., commanded all 40 circuits of Saturday's 16th annual Bill Hendren Memorial at Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway for a $10,000 payday on the RUSH Crate Late Model Series. Ferguson beat Mason Zeigler by 3.940 seconds for his second career RUSH Crate victory, both coming at PPMS.
Quotable: "The car was a dream to drive, it’s a brand new Longhorn by Wesley Page. I gotta thank Cameron Tribble for letting me drive it," Ferguson said before later adding, "the car drove itself. On the start of the dash, everybody kinda went to the bottom, so I figured it was gonna kinda do the same thing and jumble everybody up. It left the top open and luckily everything just played out for me."
Key notes: Lucas Oil Series regular Carson Ferguson led by as much as 4.230 seconds until a lap-23 caution erased his lead before stretching his advantage to nearly four seconds over the final 18 circuits. ... It's his second feature win of the season, adding to a July 25 Slingin' Dirt Late Model Series victory at Florence Speedway in Union, Ky. ... Ferguson notched his second career RUSH Crate tour triumph, both coming in PPMS's Bill Hendren Memorial after capturing last year's $4,000 prelim also aboard a Cameron Tribble-owned Longhorn. ... Although nearly four seconds behind Ferguson, Zeigler, Brown and Blair all finished within 1.5 seconds in second-fourth. ... Dave Hess Jr. passed Demetrios Drellos for sixth on the final lap. ... Polesitter Darrell Lanigan faded to finish eighth. ... The 19-minute race was slowed once for Clinton Hersh's blown engine on lap 23. ... The event honored Bill Hendren, the founder of Hendren Racing Engines which revolutionized and perfected the Crate engine. Bill died on March 19, 2011, but his legacy on Crate Late Model racing continues through his sons, Steve and Mike Hendren, who continue to operate the family business. ... Held on the undercard of the 38th annual Pittsburgher, 15 starters completed 40 laps with 20 running at the checkers. ... Brodie Oravetz won the night's 10-lap non-qualifiers' race, worth $400.
