Brandon Overton gets rolling before his $10,000 Volunteer victory.
What won the race: Outside front-row starter Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., led all 40 laps of the second round of Volunteer Speedway's four-night Gauntlet for a $10,000 victory. Running virtually unchallenged, Overton took the checkers 2.668 seconds ahead of Benji Hicks in the unsanctioned affair at the 4/10-mile oval.
Quotable: "I knew getting into (turn) one on that start was gonna be real critical. So, thanks to (carburetor builder) Randy Clary and Clements Engines, we got a good takeoff. And I just tried to maintain. I seen (Jonathan Davenport) pull to the infield and I'm like, 'All right, so just, just stay calm.' He's been fast as hell since we unloaded over here," Overton said adding later that "I am not good here. So to finally win one, we changed everything on our car today, and it obviously paid off."
Key notes: Thursday's $7,500 winner Jonathan Davenport, who started on the pole, was an early retiree after getting into the turn-one wall on a lap-four restart. ... Third-running Chris Madden crushed the turn-two wall on the 36th lap while battling for second with Benji Hicks; he was OK but the Infinity Race Cars house car suffered significant damage. ... Besides the yellow for Madden's departure, two other cautions slowed the action, the first on the fourth lap for Mike Marlar's flat tire. ... A lap-30 yellow appeared when a banner fell onto the racing surface. ... Eleven drivers completed 40 laps. ... In heat action, Alex Vance dropped fluid on the track, heading pitside before the race started. … Chris Ferguson's Wolfenbarger family car went up in smoke in finishing fourth in the first heat with apparent terminal engine trouble (Ferguson plans to be in his own car there this weekend). ... Kaede Loudy missed the third heat after battling apparent engine issues. ... Hayden Cardwell won the sportsman feature. ... After an off-day Thursday, The Gauntlet continues Friday with a $20,000-to-win feature. Any driver with perfect attendance who wins a prelim and Saturday's $30,000-to-win picks up a $100,000 bonus (Davenport and Overton are currently eligible).
On the move: Devin Moran of Dresden, Ohio, started 19th and finished fifth.
