Dillon Tidmore raced to a $5,000 victory at Sugar Creek Raceway.
What won the race: Taking control as early leader Kaede Loudy hopped the turn-four cushion on lap 21, third-starting Dillon Tidmore of Gadsden, Ala., led the final 20 laps to win Saturday's second annual Apple Festival Finale at Sugar Creek Raceway. Tidmore beat Jordy Nipper to the line by 0.646 of a second for the $5,000 payday and his third overall victory of the season.
Quotable: “I definitely don’t think we had the best car, got a little bit of luck when (Kaede Loudy) and Jordy (Nipper) got over the cushion there and I got him on a restart one time,” Tidmore said. “Definitely don’t feel like we had the best car, but played it smart and glad to finally get the monkey of our back.”
Key notes: Tidmore recorded his first major event win since a $5,000 Southern All Star Series victory last fall at Buckshot Speedway in Clanton, Ala. ... He also has local wins at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, Ala. (June 8) and North Georgia Speedway in Chatsworth (June 22). ... Pole-starting Jordy Nipper traded second with Kaede Loudy before prevailing for good on lap 24 and trailing Tidmore the rest of the way. ... Loudy, of Rogersville, Tenn., led the opening 20 laps before allowing Tidmore and Nipper to slip by when he jumped the turn-four cushion on lap 21. Loudy slowed from third and pulled off during the race's fifth and final caution just four laps later. ... Sixth-starting David Payne inherited third on the lap-25 restart and rounded out the podium finishers. ... After scratching from time trials, Dalton Cook charged to fourth. ... Galen Robinson slowed from fourth on lap 11, triggering the second slowdown. He was the race's first retiree. ... The event signifies the closing of North Georgia’s apple picking season before cold weather begins to set in. ... The 40-lapper lasted 28 minutes, with eight drivers completing the distance.
On the move: Dalton Cook of Columbus, Ga., started 16th and finished fourth.
