Brian Shirley celebrates his $10,000 payday in Brownstown, Ill.
What won the race: Making an outside move on polesitter Shannon Babb on the 13th lap, Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., led the rest of the way Friday at the Brownstown Bullring, turning back Babb's last-ditch rally for a $10,000 MARS Championship Series victory. The outside front-row starter took the checkers 0.417 of a second ahead of Babb for his second MARS victory of the season and 23rd of his career.
Quotable: "I was super worried. I don't know what happened (after) that restart," Shirley said. "My car started laying over real bad and I definitely didn't think he was gonna make it to the end of the race. So, by the good Lord, he let us finish the race."
Key notes: A World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series regular who was left with an open schedule after the tour's weekend doubleheader in the Southeast was rained out, Shirley tallied his sixth overall victory of the season despite worrying that his right-rear tire was going flat late. ... Shirley also avoided near disaster when he and Bob Gardner made contact exiting turn four just past halfway. ... Runner-up Babb, who led the first 12 laps, nearly edged underneath Shirley exiting turn two on the final lap, but Shirley swept back ahead down the backstretch. ... Third-place finisher Tanner English, winner of last year's event, had apparent power steering problems during the 50-lap feature while improving three positions. ... Points leader Jason Feger started fourth, dropped back to ninth early, then rallied to finish fourth. ... Fifth-running Rodney Melvin retired with a flat tire after 14 laps. ... Two cautions slowed the feature, the first for Doug Tye on the fourth lap. ... A lap-37 caution dropped when fourth-running Brandon Sheppard slowed with a flat right-rear tire. ... Babb lowered the track record in time trials to 12.222 seconds. ... In time trials, Daniel Adams flipped in turn one, damaging a portion of the fence and destroying his primary car. He was uninjured and took over his backup car from Rich Bell; he transferred through the consolation. ... NAPA Auto Parts (McKay Corporation) sponsored the event. ... The series was scheduled to run Paducah (Ky.) International Raceway's USA World 50 on Saturday, but the race was called off on Friday due to rain.
On the move: Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill., started 12th and finished seventh.
