What won the race: Making the outside groove work in the final laps, Cole Searing of Huron, S.D., overtook Jeff Provinzino for good on the 36th of 40 laps for a $3,000 Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series victory at Hibbing Raceway's Labor Day Shootout. Searing, who caught a key caution that erased a mistake that saw him go over the banking, took the checkers 1.2 seconds ahead of Provinzino, who led 33 laps in looking for his first series victory since 2017.
Quotable: "I don't know what I was doing," Searing said of slipping over the banking on a lap-25 restart, a mistake erased by a quick caution. "I was kind of getting impatient following and I sailed in there a little faster than I did every other lap. So (a crew member) said I got a birthday present, which I did. I don't wanna thank the (Rick Niemi) for that (spin that drew a yellow flag) — but he really helped me out. But was able to just kind of tug on my belts a little bit and slow down and make it work. So all in all is a great night."
Key notes: Searing, in a tight points battle with Tyler Peterson, notched his sixth series victory of the season and eighth of his career. ... Searing led the first lap and chased Provinzino most of the rest of the way. Moving to the outside, Searing edged into the lead on the 34th lap, allowed Provinzino to regain the point on lap 35, then led the final five laps. ... Provinzino, winless in 2024, was searching for his first WISSOTA Challenge victory since Hibbing's Labor Day Shootout in 2017. ... Four cautions slowed the action, the last one on the 32nd lap for a multicar pileup in turns three and four that included Harry Hanson and Jayme Lautigar. ... Zach Wohlers spun in front of the leaders for a lap-25 yellow, but the frontrunners avoided calamity (Rick Niemi spun in turn-four on the ensuing restart). ... Neimi and Shane Sabraski tangled in turn three on the opening lap. ... In Saturday's WCS event at Hibbing, Kyle Peterlin led all but nine laps for a $3,000 payday. Peterlin finished sixth in the finale.
On the move: Shane Sabraski of Rice, Minn., started 17th and finished fifth.
