Ryan Gustin hoists the Ice Bowl trophy in winning 2024's first Super Late Model feature.
What won the race: Using an outside move to take the point from early leader Christian Hanger on lap 22, fourth-starting Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa, led the final 29 laps to win Saturday's 33rd annual Ice Bowl at Talladega Short Track. Gustin earned $7,500 in his debut aboard the Todd Cooney-owned Longhorn Chassis as the duo prepares for the World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series season.
Quotable: “I was honestly kinda happy to see the yellows there. Lapped traffic was three-wide in front of us and it was kinda like a wall, there really wasn’t anywhere to go,” Gustin said in victory lane. “That start (Seawright and McCarter incident) was pretty wild there too, I’m not sure what happened there. You just carry so much more momentum up off the (outside line) when you enter in there, you get that big run down the hill, but I figured as long as I didn't mess it up we were in pretty good shape.”
Key notes: Hanger, of Winchester, Tenn., led the first 21 laps before fading to finish third. ... Ninth-starting Oakley Johns stormed forward to challenge Gustin in the closing laps, finishing 0.259 of a second back aboard a Jeff Greer-owned Longhorn Chassis. ... Defending Ice Bowl winner Ray Cook improved seven positions and finished fourth. ... Sam Seawright completed the top five after overcoming an opening-lap tangle with Pierce McCarter as the two battled for the lead. Seawright attempted to slide McCarter, but contact ensued that ended McCarter's night. Bryson Mitchell was also involved in the incident and couldn't continue. ... Jody Knowles gained seven spots and finished 10th. ... Todd Cooney finished 11th, the first car one lap down. ... Jadon Frame slowed from fourth while Jamie Oliver pulled off from 12th, with both drivers calling it a night on lap 22. ... Saturday's main event was slowed by five cautions and lasted 33 minutes, with 12 cars running at the finish.
On the move: Mark Page of Douglasville, Ga., started 15th and finished seventh.
