Bobby Pierce relishes yet another payday on the World of Outlaws tour.
What won the race: Executing a textbook turn-three slider on early leader Adam Stricker to seize command lap seven, second-starting Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., controlled the remainder of the 40-lap distance to capture Friday's 40th annual Hoosier Dirt Classic at Brownstown Speedway. Pierce earned his 13th full-field World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series victory of the season and the 17th of his career.
Quotable: “Being the first heat race, it was a little tricky,” Pierce said. “We kind of had to guess what the track was gonna do (for the feature) after them other heats, and I told my dad right away, ‘The tacky spots are tacky but the slick spots are really slick,’ so we went ahead and tightened up. But an awesome car and awesome effort by team again.”
Key notes: Friday's co-sanctioned event gave Pierce his first career Valvoline Iron-Man Series triumph; it was Pierce's second win of the season at Brownstown after topping April's $6,000 inaugural Ira Bastin Memorial in Northern Allstars Late Model Series competition. ... Fourth-starting Chris Madden moved into the runner-up spot on a lap-21 restart and trailed Pierce the rest of the way, finishing 1.755 seconds back. ... Gordy Gundaker battled Adam Stricker in the final laps, prevailing to finish fourth and match his career-best series finish. ... Strickler, who led laps 1-7, scored a WoO career-best finish of fifth in his third feature start on the tour. ... Ryan Gustin started for the pole, but he docked two spots by officials for jumping the second attempt at the original start, moving Stricker to the pole; Gustin then slowed to draw the race's third caution on lap two before pulling off. ... Tenth-starting Kyle Bronson ran as high as fourth before settling for sixth. ... Dennis Erb Jr., who won the most recent WoO stop at Brownstown in 2007, gained 11 spots and finished ninth. ... Nick Hoffman rallied to finish 11th after pitting to repair left-front damage following contact with an infield tractor tire. ... Brandon Sheppard ran as high as fifth before striking an infield tire in turn one and sustaining nose damage then caused him to slip as low as 13th before bringing out the seventh and final caution on lap 27. ... Sixth-running Brian Shirley struck an infield tire on the lap-21 restart and drew a caution flag. His car sustained more nose damage when James Rice turned right toward the pit exit during the caution period and Shirley hit him. ... Friday's 29-minute feature saw 16 competitors complete 40 laps and 19 running at the finish. ... Josh Rice hopped the turn-four cushion and made heavy contact with the frontstretch wall during his heat, ending his night. ... Sam Mars, the son of retired star Jimmy Mars, failed to qualify in his Super Late Model debut behind the wheel of the MB Customs house car.
On the move: Tyler Erb of New Waverly, Texas, started 16th and finished third.
