Trent Ivey climbs atop the winning car to celebrate at Charlotte.
What won the race: Trent Ivey of Union, S.C., surged from the eighth starting spot to win Saturday's 30-lap 604 Crate Late Model portion of the World Short Track Championship at The Dirt Track at Charlotte. Ivey's win, which came 1.085 seconds ahead of Dillon Brown, was worth $4,000.
Quotable: “I was caught between trying to save my soft right-rear (tire), which was a little different than anybody else,” Ivey said. “I was trying to blast to the front and hope everyone else went soft. The car was amazing, man, and it’s the first time I’ve ever driven this thing. I’m no stranger to Charlotte, but it’s been a while since I’ve won here.”
Key notes: Ivey took the lead from Dillon Brown, last year's 604 event winner, on lap 19 and never relinquished control en route to his first World Short Track Championship triumph. ... Gaffney, S.C.’s Brown said he made a wrong tire choice likely cost him a second straight victory in the event; his hard-compound right-rear was overcome by Ivey's soft rubber. … Colby Quick of Salisbury, N.C., led the non-touring CRUSA event to green but an opening-lap spin foiled his efforts. He was credited with a 26th-place finish. ... The 604 Crate Late Model event was part of the 10-division World Short Track Championship at Charlotte Motor Speedway’s 4/10-mile dirt track. … Saturday's 604 Late Model feature lasted 17 minutes with 15 of 26 starters finishing on the lead lap. ... Stephen Pedulla of Kannapolis, N.C., led flag-to-flag to win Thursday's 20-lap, $600-to-win preliminary feature. He finished 12th in Saturday's headliner.
On the move: Trent Ivey won from the eighth starting spot.
Winner's sponsors: Ivey drove the Gary Shurling and Randall Brewster-owned No. G4 Rocket Chassis sponsored by Badger Rental Services and Built South.
